A word is a discrete and pertinent element of writing or speech, which when used alone or with others,
delivers a meaning agreeable to both the sender and the receiver. Distinctive languages use diverse
words as derived from the language’s morphemes. In the slightest element of a language, speakers and
writers use different words to convey different meaning to accomplish maximum contact with the
audience. Due to a range of confounding factors, every individual develops a subliminal hierarchal list of
words.
The selection might mull over significant elements such as applicability, relevance, effect, legitimacy,
legend, and etcetera. As such, every language user has a favorite word, which he or she frequently uses
than the rest of equally applicable words. In this article, the author examines ‘Survive’ as a favorite
English word. In additional, the article discusses two general aspects that lead to intuitive selection of a
preferred word.
Survive is a word verb meaning ‘to continue to exist, especially in verge of danger’. Many reasons qualify
‘survive’ to be a preferred word, especially in social context. To begin with, the word is acceptable and
relevant despite the audience. Psychologists argue that survive is the most basic human instinct. As
such, every individual has a conceptual understanding of surviving, which offers an extensive connection
every time a writer or a speaker theorizes the idea. In a sociological perspective, societies thrive in
‘survival for the fittest’ model where surviving is not being alive but being secure from social
victimization. Therefore, the relevance of the word extends from life-threatening events to the most
trivial facets of life.
Secondly, the word survive is not content-limited. Although the word develops a deep emotional
attachment to the audience, the society does not limit its usage to the socially justified descriptions
only. Therefore, a writer or a speaker can freely use the word to create an analogy of the described
event and the survive concept. On the other hand, although the word ‘rape’, which denotes the act of
forcefully engaging a person in intercourse, is more expressive than ‘survive’, it is not socially acceptable
in a metaphoric characterization. In a retrospect, fewer individuals are likely to identify with the rape
concept despite the profound meaning.
The word ‘survive’ is one of the most resilient words in English language due to its high applicability,
acceptance, and relevance. Despite the circumstances surrounding an event, every individual seeks to
survive and thrive thus making it a daily perception of life. Therefore, the power of the word emerges
not from its morphology characteristics, but from its social concept.
