Likewise, in Japan, Buddhism’s gender agnosticism along with the women-friendly ideology of Shinto laid the groundwork for Japanese women, who were otherwise homebound like their Chinese counterparts. But the Japanese women found other meaningful ways to assert themselves; they developed their own aesthetic style distinct from Tang women and, as exemplified by Heian writers like Murasaki Shikibu, also expressed themselves through writing and literature.
