This passage is contained in the second paragraph
of the narrative. The author says, “they saw
girls…” which leads the reader to think about the
age of the author and his friend. He continues to
say that they were not able to speak to them like
they used to before. The reader is forced to think
of reasons why they were not able to talk to them
unlike before, even to Sandy – his neighbor.

changes that had taken place and the
consequences these changes had on their
relationships. For reasons not stated in this
particular passage, the changes had strained the
relationship, and they were not able to speak to
them again as they used to.

the narrative. It contains a description of the area
where the two boys were residing – in the
Southern Pacific railroad. The reader gets to have
an abstract physical description of the area, and
the economic activities that the people of that
area were practicing, which was mining.
