Independent research
First and foremost, the ISM must be a piece of independent research that you have undertaken personally. It does not need to be ‘original’ in the sense that it is based on previously unread or unpublished documents; nor must it contain ideas and arguments that are in some way innovative or novel (although we do not wish to discourage you from such an ambition!) Rather, we expect to see evidence of research and reading that reveals initiative and a depth of enquiry and investigation which shows that you have acquired a special knowledge of the subject.
Structure
Unlike a long assessed essay which may be written without any subdivisions, you may find it helpful to break down the ISM into various sections. After the Abstract and Table of Contents, the ISM should begin with an introduction highlighting the main features of the discussion and previewing the key findings. After that, your work should follow your table of contents. All that matters is that the ISM proceeds logically: it should contain a statement of the intellectual or practical problem that you are concerned with; the research questions that you want to set yourself; any theory(ies) and research methods you will be using to tackle your problem/question; your interpretation of the evidence you have uncovered (including any debates surrounding this evidence); and the conclusions you draw for existing and future research in this field.

The word limit is absolute: there is no leeway.
Abstract
This is a statement, before the main body of your work, which previews the ISM’s main concerns and argument. It should be no longer than 300 words. The abstract will not count towards the maximum permitted word length. It should be clearly marked ‘Abstract’.
Table of contents
Please make sure to include a table of contents (TOC) in your ISM, in which you give an overview of the different chapters and subsections with their commencing page numbers. The TOC should be included on a page (or pages) before the start of the written work. The TOC will not count towards the maximum permitted word length.

The ISM must be double-spaced throughout. Please use a clear font and size, such as Times New Roman or Palatino Linotype in size 11 or 12 points. If you intend to include tables or figures, label them clearly and sequentially (Table 1, Table 2, Figure 1, Figure 2) and explain their significance at an appropriate place in the text. Figures and tables should appear shortly after their first mention in the text. Proper referencing and a full bibliography are essential.
