WHEN TEXTING IS WRONG
Read and choose one of the following three essays within Chapter 3 of the textbook Perspectives on Argument on which to write the summary-analysis-response paper:
Essay #2 “Psst! Ask for Donor 1913” by Gina Kolata
Essay #3, “When Texting Is Wrong” by Randy Cohen
Essay #4, “Flag Protection: A Brief History of Recent Supreme Court Decisions” by Congressional Research Service
The summary-analysis-response paper MUST be on one of these three essays.
STEP 2. UNDERSTAND THE ASSIGNMENT REQUIRMENTS and WRITING THE PAPER
The Summary-Analysis-Response Paper has the following requirements:
The analysis must be a minimum of four fully developed paragraphs with a minimum of 200 words per paragraph.
The first paragraph is the introduction, which is a survey of the essay.
State the essay’s title and its author’s name.
Identify the issue and the author’s claim, including any subclaims or ideas that support the claim.
The survey addresses the general question: What is this about?
The second paragraph is the summary.
Identify the author’s position on the issue.
Identify and discuss supporting evidence for the author’s claim and/or subclaims.
The summary addresses the general questions: What did the author say about the claim? and How did he/she support the position?
The third paragraph is the analysis.
Evaluate whether the essay is successful or unsuccessful in its claim of an issue.
Determine whether the claim is or is not well supported.
Review how the author establishes his/her authority, his/her assumed audience, and his/her organization of the essay.
The analysis addresses the general question: What qualities in this essay make it an effective or ineffective argument?
The fourth paragraph is the response, which also serves as the conclusion.
Indicate whether you agree or disagree with the argument and why.
Identify what information within the argument is new to you and relate how this new information may have influenced you.
Expand the claim and support into an extended topic of the same issue and/or into a new issue.
Reveal a personal like or dislike for the essay and explore your personal reaction.
The response addresses the general question: What are my personal reactions to this essay, its author, and why?
Use the example Summary-Analysis-Response Paper in Chapter 3 as a model (but only as a model). Beware: The example paper does NOT meet all of this assignment’s requirements. Your first paragraph must include the title and author of your selected essay (the example paper does not), and all of your paragraphs must be fully developed (not all of the paragraphs in the example paper are fully developed) with 200 words per paragraph.
Do and Don’t List
Do NOT overtly reference the paper, paragraphs, or instructions. For example, do NOT write “I selected essay #2 for my paper” OR “This is my analysis paragraph.” Do not write any statements that reference the paper, paragraphs, and instructions.
DO use correct grammar, mechanics, punctuation, and usage.
DO complete a final grammar and spell check before posting.
DO double check formatting before and after posting. The submission will be scored “as is.”
HOW TO POST THE SUMMARY-ANALYSIS-RESPONSE PAPER
Click on the heading “Click Here! Part C: Discussion Board #2, Summary-Analysis-Response Paper (Click Here to Post and Respond).”
Click on “Create Thread.”
In the subject field, type “Essay #[number selected], Your Full Name,” and in the text field, type your assignment posting. This specific information in the subject field is very important for tracking and grading–follow these specific instructions for the subject field. Not having the required subject title will result in a ten-point deduction!
Click “Submit.”
