What does it take for journalism to facilitate change?
While journalists like Tarbell, Steffens, Riis, Sinclair, Herr, Hersh, and Hersey are a few of the successful journalists who have found a public audience affected and motivated towards change by their work, many others have not had the same kind of success. So, what makes the difference? What are the approaches and subjects that make audiences take note, and want to bring about change as a result? These are some of the questions I want you to think about and write about as you complete this project. I am going to ask you to look at a particular case of investigative journalism and analyze it in light of the readings we have done so far. I want you to research the case and how it was reported, and to look at the original news articles. I want you to think of all that was at stake this process both for the journalists and all of the people who were being named in the articles. I want you to consider the decisions and implications of each stage of this investigation.
The case I want you to look at is the exposure of Senator Bob Packwood as a serial harasser, which came to light in 1992.
It was freelance reporter Florence Graves who took the story to The Washington Post. The first article appeared on 22 November, 1992. There are nine key articles in The Washington Post that followed the case, and the outcome of the reporting. One of them, written in 1995, has Graves reflect on why this was a story that had to be reported, despite the jeopardy for the women who came forward, and for herself.
You will see parallels between this story and the issues around sexual harassment and the #metoo campaign.
To complete this assignment:
I want you to research this reporting, and find and collect the articles written by Graves for The Washington Post. You should save them as pdf files and attach them to the assignment.
I want you to write a minimum 3 page paper that summarizes the case, and then analyzes the issues at stake in this reporting. You can obviously do other research about the case, and link aspects of reporting that we have already discussed. You are analyzing the methods, challenges, and issues involved in this case and presenting them as a case study of how this journalistic enterprise developed and played out. (You will probably end up writing more that three pages, and that is perfectly fine)
This project requires that you complete research using the online databases available through TU Library, and then present a a summary and analysis of what you find. Where you refer to secondary texts it is necessary for you to cite the sources correctly within the essay, and in a works cited page at the end of the essay. All of the information that you need to get you started is in the assignment information abov
