who eventually moved to Memphis, tn then southside of chicago. interviewing my great aunt. If
you see a client it is referring to my aunt. All interview questions has to be answered and I
provided some information.

Childhood
1. What’s your favorite comfort toy when you were sick? If it was a doll, stuffed animal, or

-Jessie johnson; doesn’t have a middle name
-Favorite candy: Loved all kinds of candy, favorite was snickers; candy use to cost a penny

-Grew up in Tennessee then moved to chicago in her late 20’s early 30s

Chores: Not a lot of chores; responsible for her younger brothers after her mother passed
-Historical events: Remembers Pearl Harbor; went hunting with her dad and they heard about it
on the radio as they were driving home
-Favorite in school: Recess because they didn’t have P.E. teacher
-First job: worked on a farm picking cotton etc.

-Household appliances: had a refrigerator and a gas stove; didn’t have a washing machine or a
dryer
-Best trip/vacation: California to visit her son she hadnt seen in years
-Best thing about young adulthood: she spent alot of time with family
-Worst thing about young adulthood: at her first job she only made $3,000 a year, and only could
have 2 meals per day to watch the money she spent; didn’t have a car and had to do a lot of
walking; learned how to budget after her mother passed when she was in charge of buying the
groceries
–Views life now as blessed; smoked for years and quit in 1975 and was the smartest thing she’s
ever done; next smartest thing was moving to chicago
-Didn’t think too much about her life when she was 20 or 30 and now looking back she is
grateful to just be around; went with the flow
-Health practices: doctors know a lot more than they did when she was a kid; been very fortunate
with her care and has had some good doctors
-Never had the mumps; polio was very rampant when she was a child and was very fortunate to
not have it
-Alzheimers and dementia was never mentioned when she was a kid; no one was worried about
obesity when she was a kid and now it’s one of the biggest health concerns; we conquer one
thing and then another disease pops up
-Always have eaten well, quit smoking, likes a lot of fruits and vegetables, has had a yearly
physical for as long as she can remember; has regular mammograms and colonoscopies
-Successful aging: Trying to have a healthy lifestyle, get right with God, she had friends that
convinced her to read the Bible and that’s how she got involved with church; was raised a baptist
and she go to church a few times out the year but wwatch it on tv daily.
-married once, have 3 kid;

-Wants to be remembered for as being a good, caring person and having been a good teacher

She recalled that the house they lived in did not have an air conditioner, but had a fan in the attic
that circulated the air through the house. They had a refrigerator and a gas stove, but she does
not recall there being a washing machine or dryer.
What was your first Job? firsst job in chicago was at toosie toys factory.
What was the best thing about this part of your life? The worst thing?
The worst thing was when she worked on the far, she only made $3,000 per year and so she had
to budget her money very carefully. She did not own a car and would walk every where and
often times could only afford to eat two meals a day.
Older Adulthood
How do you view life now? How does that compare to your view of life when you were 20 or
30 years old?
jessie stated that she is blessed. As far as her view of her life when she was 20 or 30, she stated
that she had a Good Life, Can’t Complain. She did not think too much about it, she just went
with the flow.
The best decision, that she made was quitting smoking in 1975.
How have health practices, health conditions, and health care changed over your lifespan?
she feels that Doctors know more now than they did when she was young. She had every
childhood disease except for the Mumps and Polio. She remembered a time when Polio was
rampant and people had never heard of Alzheimer’s and Dementia. Obesity is now the big
disease.
How would you define successful aging?
Having a healthy lifestyle and getting right with God. jessie stated that she was raised a
Methodist, however, for many of her adult years, she was Agnostic. After she moving to Wesley
Village a few of her neighbors invited to her to read the bible with them. Since then, she has
returned to the Methodist Church.
What do you do to keep yourself healthy?
she eats healthy and she likes lots of different fruits and vegetables, and that makes it easier.
Also, staying active.
I asked jessie what she wanted to be remembered for: She stated that she wanted to be
remembered for being and caring person.
As an adult she has had eye surgery. and felt like the nurse that was by her side used nursing and
other appropriate theories and models and an appropriate ethical
framework. such as theorists Betty Neuman because the CRNA Explain the process of

going under anesthesia. the nurse talked with AUNTt and explained the procedure to help reduce the stress.
Provide medication to relax the patient from having anxiety. The scrub nurse prepared tools for the
surgeon.The nurses prepped the room getting out the type of lenses that doctor usually use.
I observed the doctor tell the patient to look down in times their appeared to be resistance. The
nurses help assisted the aunt to move to the head of the bed and place a pillow under her knees. The aunt body was
fully covered aside for the eye the doctor was operating on.
2.4- The doctor would call out a step she just finished so the nurse would know to get the artificial lens ready.
2.5- The nurse asked the my aunt how she felt and if she would like anything to eat or drink.
2.6- The doctor used an ophthalmic microscope.
2.7 – the nurse told the client that this procedure is very common.
2.8- they confirmed patient with two identifiers in the preoperative room.
2.9- The doctor usually hand write the patients information on a chart before it is entered into a computer.
2.10 – I observe the nurse tell the patient to keep patch on for 24 hours and should bend over.
2.11- I observed the nurse record patient vitals on the computer.
The patient had to sign a consent for surgery.
3.2- I observed the nurse assess patient blood pressure.
3.3- Disturbed sensory perception related to changes in the eyes due to aging manifested by diminished visual
acuity.
3.4- The surgeries were at scheduled times
3.5- Removal of the cataracts is evidence based.
The nurse explained discharge at home care.
4.4- I observed the nurse irrigate the patient eye during surgery so it wouldn’t dry out.
he procedure took about 20 minutes.
5.2- I had to move around the room making sure not to touch anything blue.
5.3- I had to make sure not to break sterile field
5.4- A sterile drape was placed properly over the eyes.
5.5- I observed the nurse instruct the client to keep her eye closed after administering drops to start it to dilate
This traditional health care practice because of the techniques the surgeon used.
