As we continue to learn about nursing research, it is imperative that we consider the ethics and oversight of conducting research. Since the Tuskegee Experiment in the 1970’s, the U.S. government now requires the oversight of the Institutional Review Board for most studies conducted on humans and fetuses. The IRB’s main responsibility is to protect the sanctity of the research, the researcher, and the subject/subject matter.

3. Go to this site and review “Frequently Asked Questions About Institutional Review Boards” (Links to an external site.)

4. Respond to the following questions: (use subheadings for questions)

a. Does your organization have an institutional review board (IRB) that reviews and approves research studies to be conducted in your organization?

Name it and provide a link to the resource site. If they do not have an IRB, locate one online or use the APU IRB site.
If you were going to conduct a research study, describe some content that might be especially helpful to you and explain why.

b. Locate a consent form used at your institution or online, preferably for a research study. If that is not accessible, a consent form for a procedure.

Use the criteria from “How to Review a Consent Document” (Links to an external site.) to determine if the selected consent form is complete and would be considered appropriate for use with the selected population.
Provide 3-4 examples from the form you selected (e.g. the form stated “risks for this study included…) to describe how it would or would not be considered appropriate based on the criteria in “How to Review a Consent Document”.
