Answer the questions of the 3 tasks by own words
FAQs about the mid-semester assessment
1. Can I use webpages and wiki to answer the questions?
NO please do not use any other sources than the materials provided in this course. All the material
you need is in the lectures (from weeks 3 to weeks 7). The Ebook readings and tutorial handouts (Weeks 3
to 7). This is because not all the material you read on the internet, or in Wiki pages, is actual validated
research. The net is full of unvalidated psychobabble.
Remember you only have 350 words per case study so keep it on task and focus on the main points.
2. Can I use any part of the EBook?
No. please stick to the course materials from weeks 3 to 7. At university, we are here to help you
learn, one way to ensure you aim to get the most out of assessments is to follow the instructions given.
3. Do I need to reference, or have a reference list at the end of the assessment?
No, not for this unit, you do not. We know where all the information is coming from (the lectures,
tutorials, E-Book and resources provided in this class) so referencing is not needed.
There is no marking criteria for referencing
(please note this is not university wide, and in most other units you will need to use refences, but not for
this assessment).
4. I am not using formal referencing, but can I still use people’s names in my answers if I wish?
You can use the names of researchers from lectures and the E-Book when referring to their work if
you wish. This is just an option and not require, but this could be useful to show you are acknowledging and
using scientific evidence and not objective opinion.
5. Can I say “I think”?
NO. This assessment is not about your opinion of what is going on. Psychology uses evidence-based
practice. When you provide a solution or advice in Psychology we want you to state what science tells us is
the better method to use.
6. In the solution can I say “I suggest this course of action”?
YES you can if you want. This is part of what we want. Please make sure your solution is backed up by
science, then suggesting a scientific solution is the point.
7. How do I structure my answer?
However you think best makes your point. We are not giving marks for writing style so you can use
dot points if that best gets across the information. However, please be concise and make sure your work is
reader/marker friendly, in other words we can understand what you say. You must proof read your work
(Hint – submit your draft to Studiosity online on canvas and ask for the assessment to be grammar and
proof read).
8. How specific do I need to be?
As specific as you can within the word limit. So somewhere between “they should communicate” and
“here is a plan for their next 3 meetings”. You need to make it clear what psychology is saying is important
so just communicating is not enough
9. Can I use social loafing and collective effort model as two separate ones?
No. Social Loafing is a concept to explain individual contribution to a group. The collective effort
model explains why social loafing occurs so by using both social loafing and the collective effort model you
are making the same point.
Also be aware that under social loafing there are several sub-types (i.e., causes, reasons, types of
social loafing). Please don’t state social loafing as one of your theories and then name a different type
under it. If you use the same justification for two of your four theories/concepts or ideas you limit your
chances of getting better marks as we are asking four 4 unrelated theories/concepts/ideas.
10. Can we work together
There are three aspects to this answer.
You must not write your answers together. This is collusion which is a part of plagiarism.
Plagiarism is where you knowingly copy a piece of work, whether that of another student, or
where you copy the exact text from a textbook or other source.
Please under no circumstances in answering this assessment should you use the exact
wording from the textbook. Your answers must be in your own words. Just because we have
said you do not need to do formal referencing it does not mean you are free to write your
answers word for word out of a textbook
Can you discuss the cases with other students? Yes in a general sense.
Please note that students cannot take the case studies to PALS to ask the PALS tutors to
say if they are using the right theories or if their answer is ok. What PALS tutors have been
asked to do is advise students how to approach this task, not to indicate what to write for
the answers or what is correct or not.
