Instructions
1. Choose a social issue that is covered in the media.
2. Locate at least four scholarly/ academic articles about the social issue using Octopus, Google Scholar, or through the Library online Journal Search. Try to find articles that will allow you to summarize the social issue in a comprehensive way. Write a 2-3 page review of the issue based on your articles. (This summary should cover: What is the problem? How is society impacted? What is the extent of the problem in Canada? What are the root causes of this problem? What are suggestions for changing this issue? What policy/policies are implicated? Etc.) You may use other books and sources to supplement the research if you choose. Identify which levels of government (federal, provincial, municipal) and which social policy (or policies) relate to the issue.
3. Seek out three printed or online news articles about this issue. (Please do not use televised news broadcasts.) Write a 1-2 page review of how the social issue is presented in the media.
4.Compare/contrast the reality of the social issue (based on your academic research) compared to how it is presented in the media. Use your critical thinking skills and write a 2-3 page comparison analysis.
Questions to consider:
•Whose agenda is put forth in the media articles? What is their agenda and why?
•Who is the target audience of the media sources? Are they attempting to appeal to a certain demographic? Does this influence the information they share?
•How might different sources communicate this issue differently?
•How might different individuals read this article? Would it be offensive to a certain person/group in particular?
•Is there an apparent reason why the media would present the issue in a different way than that of the research articles? What is/are the motive(s)?
•How could the media information be presented differently to better represent the truth about this social issue?
