Researched Critical Lens Annotated Bibliography Instructions
Purpose:
The purpose of an Annotated Bibliography is to help students accurately incorporate outside, scholarly
sources into their essay drafts without plagiarism. It makes writing a draft including scholarly sources
much easier.
Assignment:
Choose a literary work from the following list:
• Edgar Allan Poe, “The Cask of Amontillado” (short story)
• Susan Glaspell, Trifles (play) [Also called “A Jury of Her Peers”]
• Sandra Cisneros, “Woman Hollering Creek” (short story)
• Wilfred Owen, “Dulce et Decorum Est” (poem)
• e.e. cummings, “because of course god next to america I” (poem)
• Danez Smith, “not an elegy for Mike Brown” (poem)
• Danex Smith, “Dinosaurs in the Hood” (poem)
Now, begin gathering articles from the library databases. Using Literature Resources from Gale, JSTOR,
Literary Reference Center Plus, and/or Academic Search Complete, choose three (3) articles that are the
most useful in helping you develop your interpretation of the literary work you chose. When you have
found an article that you wish to use, save the source citation; print, download, or send yourself the
article so that you can return to it throughout this project.
To create your Annotated Bibliography, use the following the template
1. Title your document “Annotated Bibliography.” Then, skip a line, move the cursor to the left of
the page, and type “Topic:” Then, type your proposed topic. Be as specific as you can be at this
point in the process
2. Hit return and begin your annotated bibliography as follows:
3. Cite each source using MLA style guidelines and alphabetize entries by author last name.
4. Follow each citation with a brief annotation (200 words for both sources including A, B, and C
below) that summarizes and evaluates the source. Incorporate A, B, and C below:
A. Summarize the author’s main point and articulate the main take away for the audience
B. Evaluate the source by commenting on how this article relates to the other
ideas/interpretations you’ve read about in the other source.
C. Explain how you might use the source in your Critical Lens Literary Analysis Essay.
Please note that you MAY NOT USE Googled websites for this assignment.
The Annotated Bibliography requires students to
• Evaluate information from multiple sources.
• Develop an arguable thesis statement that presents a claim.
• Draft original, organized work, act on productive feedback, revise, and edit.
• Adapt communication for tone, purpose, audience, and situation.
• Use essential Standard American English conventions—including appropriate sentence structure
grammar, and punctuation—and formal, academic composition style.
• Use MLA style for document format and source citation.
Grading:
The grading for this assignment will account for the inclusion of the required number of sources from
the IRSC databases. This assignment will be graded on the completeness and quality of your citations
and annotations and your adherence to MLA formatting and citation guidelines. Your submission will
also be evaluated on the professional presentation of content with respect to spelling, grammar, and
punctuation.
