Transitional Fire Attack in Smaller Department

The research proposal in this course is designed to allow you to discover, analyze, and interpret a fire-related research problem. A problem is not necessarily a troublesome area but an area of desired improvement. In other words, something may be performing well, yet someone still wants to see it perform even better. That is what a lot of research is all about— how can we do it better?

Include at least the following elements in your research proposal:

a title page;
an abstract;
an introduction including the purpose of the research with support for your points from scholarly material (including a hypothesis or research question);
a literature review where you will discuss the secondary data sources you referenced and how they are relevant to your research project;
a methodology or proposed method section that describes the research method and what you would do if you were to actually carry out the study;
a results section that summarizes your predicted results;
a discussion (or conclusions and recommendations) section that broadly evaluates your proposed research;
an APA formatted reference page
an appendix containing your questionnaire, interview questions, etc.
The proposal should be at least 5 full double-spaced pages not including the title page, table of contents, references, or any appendices. Your proposal should provide at least 4 reference sources that include empirical studies.

One main difference between the research proposal and research report is the verb tense. The research proposal explains what the author would do in the future tense, while the research report is written after the data collection and analysis has been concluded.
Be sure to summarize, paraphrase, and cite the information.
Do not copy directly from the textbook or from any other source.
Websites such as Wikipedia, e-how.com, history.com, howthingswork.com, and other similar sources are not scholarly in nature and may not be used for this assignment.
All sources used, including the textbook, must be referenced; paraphrased and quoted material must have accompanying in-text citations and entries in the reference section.
All references and citations used must be in APA style.

This is some of the outline and questions I need incorporated into the proposal:

Outline

(I)Introduction: Fires are burning quicker and hotter today. The amount of time it takes for a fire to spread in a structure has diminished greatly. Can a transitional attack be an effective tactic for a smaller department with less staff?

Overview: Today’s house fires are burning faster and produce hundreds of times the amount of smoke that a fire would have 50 years ago. The amount of time it takes for that fire to overtake a single room and spread is ever-shrinking thanks to the materials that we see in homes. Given the smaller size of some departments, manpower is often limited on first arriving engines for structure fires as well as long wait times for 1st in mutual aid companies. This can sometimes result in a delay of interior aggressive attack and possibly a delay in getting water on the fire.

Question: Can a smaller initial attack crew of less than (4) personnel make an effective initial attack using a transitional method from the exterior to knock down the fire and do so in a short amount of time? The goal of my research would be to gain a better understanding of the possibilities of success in using this method to allow personnel the opportunity to quickly apply water to the fire from an exterior position, if applicable, thereby lowering internal temperatures and putting a temporary knockdown on the fire.

Background: As we know, the goal of fire attack is and has always been to get water on the fire in the quickest manner possible(Norwood,2018). The philosophy of the transitional attack is to deliver water remotely from an exterior position — front door, window, yard, etc. — of a structure to “reset” the fire while an interior attack line is also deployed to initiate the interior assault — or use the same line. By cooling and creating an inert environment, the fire decays and slows — not stops — the combustion process which results in an immediate reduction in heat energy by several hundred degrees Fahrenheit. My goal will be to determine precisely what the interior temperatures of a fire room are in a controlled testing environment that will simulate conditions as close as possible to what a department encounters. Determining the precise temperatures and water vapor percentages in a fire room 60 seconds before and after water has been applied to both an unventilated room through interior attack and a ventilated window from the outside of the structure. My research will also seek to accurately measure the amount of time it takes a (3) person crew to have water on the fire from boots on the ground.
