OUTLINE
Introduction-
Opening statement- The injustice and inequality that trans women face on a day to day basis
while incarcerated shows how as a society we have not evolved as much as we should have.
In the next sentences I will cover all the peer reviewed articles that I will be using throughout my
research essay to support my points and list what I will cover in each body paragraph
Thesis- I will use the articles and other sources to show the vast differences in how people who
are trans identifying are disproportionately more abused while incarcerated and how I will also
be showing the vast differences in opportunities/ lack of opportunities given to trans identifying
people while incarcerated. To be more specific I will show how trans identifying people get more
abuse from the people working in the prison and will also show the lack of medical and other
luxuries that would otherwise be given to someone who wasn’t trans identifying. Also mention in
thesis something about the racial aspect along with the problem.(THIS IS NOT THE THESIS…..
WRITE IT BASED ON THIS INFORMATION)
Closing sentence for intro.
Body Paragraph 1
tackle the disproportionate lack of opportunities given to trans women while being in prison. This
includes medical things and basic rights given to other prisoners who are not trans.

For this body paragraph I will be using these 2 sources:
"Challenges and opportunities for gender-affirming healthcare for transgender women in prison"
By: Sevelius, J.
"Creating, reinforcing, and resisting the gender binary: a qualitative study of transgender
women’s healthcare experiences in sex-segregated jails and prisons" By: White Hughto
Body Paragraph 2
focus on the mental aspect and danger of having Trans women in the same facilities as other
men who don't view them the same way they do. Use any accounts from the sources to add on
to your point.
The 2 sources I will use in this paragraph are:
Narratives of Transgender People Detained in Prison: The Role Played by the Utterances "Not"
(as a Feeling of Hetero- and Auto-rejection) and "Exist" (as a Feeling of Hetero- and Auto-
acceptance) for the Construction of a Discursive Self. A Suggestion of Goals and Strategies for
Psychological Counseling. By Hochdorn D
“We’re like community”: Collective identity and collective efficacy among transgender women in
prisons for men. By: Sexton L
Body Paragraph 3
tackle the abuse that trans women specifically face due to prisons not allowing them to share
the same facilities as someone who was born female.
The 2 sources I will use in this paragraph are:
Forty years after Brownmiller: Prisons for men, transgender inmates, and the rape of the
feminine By: Jenness V
“We’re like community”: Collective identity and collective efficacy among transgender women in
prisons for men. By: Sexton L
BODY PARAGRAPH 4
This paragraph will focus on the racial aspect of trangender issues, specifically black
transgendered people who face their own set of issues due to their skin.

Experiences in Schools, the Criminal Justice System, and Churches. Sex Res Soc

BODY PARAGRAPH 5
This paragraph should be similar to the one above however it will focus on latinx women
and their additional struggles with citizen/status
Issues/deportation/detainment.
Yamanis, T., Malik, M., del Río-González, A. M., Wirtz, A. L., Cooney, E., Lujan, M., . . . Poteat, T.
(2018). Legal immigration status is associated with depressive symptoms among latina transgender
women in washington, DC. International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health, 15(6),
1246. doi:http://dx.doi.org.proxy.libraries.rutgers.edu/10.3390/ijerph15061246
You may also use other sources that i have detailed in the essay to
add onto this paragraph.
BODYPARAGRAPH 6
This paragraph is about solutions, recommendations, policy changes that
you learned from the class or the readings. Theres good pieces in the
modules we’ve already done, but also look up Sylvia Rivera Law Project and
Black and Pink, two organizations that work on criminal justice issues and
entirely focused on transidentifying person and experiences (I think black
and pink is also about LGBTQ, but a big part of their work overlaps with
yours). These two organizations also did original data collection from people
in jail and these reports may help with other sections of the papers if you
want to use them. I tried to help my finding the one I knew about:

Conclusion
I will connect and reiterate everything I have said so far throughout the essay and the main
points I tackled which are the mental aspect, Healthcare, and the abuse trans women face daily
in prison, black trans issues, and latina trans issues. Also re mention the solution or fix for it. Etc
