To the Man Asleep in Our Driveway – from Tale of two America’s Book
Students must use 12-point Times New Roman font. Work that is not typed will not be accepted. No exceptions. All papers should have the following heading in the upper left-hand corner.

Your assignments must be titled (with something besides the name or the subject of the paper). The title should be centered under the heading. It should be capitalized only (do not underline your title. DO NOT put it in bold or italics or quotation marks! The title should be a TITLE not a TOPIC. For example, if you are writing a paper about how to give a dog a bath, your paper should not be called “How to Give a Dog a Bath.” Be creative.
If this heading is not at the top of the paper, the grade will be penalized 5%. The heading format DOES NOT have to be double spaced (your choice). You will also lose points for incorrect font, no page numbers, incorrect/missing title, and lack of double spacing. Additionally, do not skip extra spaces between paragraphs.
Pages must be numbered in the upper right corner. Use numbers only or your last name followed by the number. Do not have “Page 1” or “page 1.” You may have “Name 1” or simply “1” (by the way, do not put them in quotation marks). Note: the name included with the page number should be your last name only.
Literary Essay
Choose one of the following topics based upon the essays listed below. You must write your essay based on one of these topics. Essays should be 2—4 pages in length (500 words minimum). You must use at least two correctly formatted direct quotes from the original text in your essay. NOTE: This is NOT a summary, but you will likely need to include a short overview of the piece in order to provide some background. BE SURE to include the title and author in your introductory paragraph.
Note: Do NOT use first person or second person in this essay. Follow the formatting guidelines listed in the syllabus.
“To the Man Asleep in Our Driveway Who Might Be Named Phil” by Anthony Doerr
1. In this essay, Doerr recalls coming home to find a man asleep in a car in his driveway. Discuss the way in which Doerr handled the situation and why he made the decisions he did when confronted with this situation. Doerr repeats that something seems “off,” and he wonders if he did the right thing. Discuss Doerr’s inner conflict and the questions he has for himself because of the way in which the situation is handled by himself as well as the police. Is there another way in which the situation should have been handled? Why or why not
