This assignment is an opportunity to deeply engage and think critically about gender as arelational dynamic in heterosexual family transitions. Draw on gender as a relational
dynamic from weeks 5, 7, and 8, including chapters 6, 7, 8, and 10. Identify a couple youknow, or a couple featured in media (a novel, tv show, movie, etc.) and engage with the
following questions in four double spaced pages or less:  Identify one transition the couple is undergoing. o E.g. dating, courting, coupling, dissolving unions, having or raising
children, etc.  Explain the transition using gender:
o How does gender play a role in the transition?  E.g., think about who has more power, who has more of a say, etc. o What gendered expectations does each member hold for themselves andeach other?
o How does the man and woman differently experience the transition?  E.g., think of the differences in expectations and experiences
between a mother and father of a newborn.  How is male privilege recreated and institutionalized in the transition?
o E.g., a woman relocating to live with her partner leaves behind familiar andfamilial networks and resources, while he continues to enjoy easy access tothe same.
Recommended paper outline:  Introduction: introduce the couple’s dynamic you are analyzing and relate it toyour
paper thesis (~ ¾ page)  Explain how gender structures the couple’s relations in the transition you are
naming (~ 1 ½ page)  Describe how male privilege is (or is not) recreated and institutionalized in the
couples you are analyzing (~ 1 page)  Conclusion: summarize your main arguments (~ ¾ page)
Use ASA style citations when citing the textbook. You do not need to draw on additional
research literature; if you do so, be sure to cite that as well. Be sure to carefully proofreadbefore submission. Marking Rubric:  A+= All questioned answered thoroughly and explained thoughtfully with clear
examples. Writing is excellent and paper well-organized.  A = All questions answered in full, but some parts lacking detail or missing minor
information. Writing is good and paper is generally well-organized.  B = Questions mostly answered in full, but missing something important, goes
off-track, contains incorrect information, or is difficult to follow. Still clear the
material is understood, though it may not be explained as well.
 C = Questions are answered briefly and not clear student fully understands the
material. Response is more general and does not clearly explain theories or
criticisms in own words  D = Some relevant information, but difficult to follow or does not really attempt toanswer all questions. Not clear that student had read or understood the material  F = Almost no relevant information. Student has only minimally attempted to
answer the questions asked. Response is general and does not include many
