THE PRISON SERVICE AND OTHERS

Part One of your Portfolio is a 1000-word in-depth focus on one area of criminal justice professional practice written in an academic style.

The Prison Service

As guidance, the in-depth focus section of your Portfolio might include the following:

• An introduction to the area of practice; what is its function? History? Recent policy changes? Etc.
• A discussion of a particular contemporary issue that is affecting the organisation or your chosen aspect of criminal justice practice (probation provision and privatisation).
• The merits or strengths of this sector/area of practice, or its impact on people.
• How this area connects to other agencies or influences the criminal justice sector more widely.

For the Part One section you need to use a minimum of five sources of information, of which at least three should be academic sources (books, journal articles etc.). Other non-academic sources may include websites from related organisations ( Police.UK, National Probation, or a charity that supports victims or offenders), UK government/organisation strategies, policy documents etc.

Part Two of your Portfolio should reflect on four of the other aspects of criminal justice professional practice that are covered on the course (250 words per topic, 1000 words in total).

1. The Police Service
2. The Third Sector (Independent organisations working in Criminal Justice) The liminality
3. Working with sex offenders
4. Youth Justice & Youth Offending-The youth offending service

You are expected to work on this part of the assessment on an ongoing basis throughout the course,  you should write a paragraph or two each week, preferably immediately after the session. In this writing you should critically reflect on:

• What you have learnt from the session.
• What you have taken from the set reading for that week
• New insights you have gained about working in this particular area of criminal justice.
• Your potential interest in working in this specific field in the future.(YES ON ALL OF 5 TOPICS)

For Part Two you need to use a minimum of one academic reference per an aspect of professional practice in criminal justice that you are reflecting on. This should be the set seminar reading, but you can of course include additional sources if you wish. You can write in the first person in this part of the assessment if you wish.
