Our focus will be to evaluate two media sources that cover the “critical” problem affecting your community. This requires a careful, thoughtful analysis and the employment of rhetorical tactics, ideas, arguments, and thinking. Your task in this assignment will be to push beyond surface appearances and to present an insightful discussion of the media coverage of your community, in the way that it is written, published and disseminated.

At present, media sources are as widespread and easily accessible. With the proliferation of news sources online, we have come to expect instant, complete coverage of any given topic, despite the fact that many sources may be heavily biased. As a way of deciphering the truth, we must depend on a range of journalists, or a particularly trustworthy news source as source of information for events occurring across the globe.
However, as we’ve discussed the fact that objectivity is near impossible, each source tends to have its particular “spin.” The language used to justify, defend, or sell policies and actions can often reveal underlying motivations. Examples of charged language can be seen everywhere across your lives– from your professors, textbooks, policy makers and think-tanks to the governments themselves. In this regard, journalists or media sources can also be prone to partisanship. In pursuing this topic, it is important to ask yourself about the commercial nature of mainstream media, and how it may sensationalize trivial issues at the expense of educating the public on more pressing concerns. Is the media serving the best interests of the public? Is it serving the interests of the international community? It is failing both?

Pick a problem that is affecting your community and investigate TWO examples of the prevailing media coverage of that issue.
Summarize each news article for its content.
Analyze the rhetorical situation for each, focusing on context, audience and purpose, to examine the unique point of view this article is taking. This is a compare/contrast exercise. How are they similar/different?
Evaluate the reporting—the point of view, the political language, the bias of the author or publisher— and consider how the rhetoric shapes, advances, or stalls the debate. Answer this question in particular: How does bias affect our ability to understand and address the issue effectively?
