Instructions

The data from the National Nutrition Monitoring System can be used in many different ways. Search PubMed (details below) to find one article that uses the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) as the study sample for analysis. You can use the acronym, NHANES, to aid in your search.

If you are having trouble downloading a journal article for the project, please make sure that you are using the PubMed or Web of Science database through the UB Libraries website.  You may do this by visiting the UB libraries homepage and choose the Browse: “Databases” tab.  Then type “P” into the search box to find “PubMed”.  Or type “Web of science” into the search box. You may be asked to log in with your UBITname and password.  The PubMed or Web of Science site looks the same as it does when you do not go through UB, but now you will have full-text access to most articles that you find.  Use the search to locate a list of journal articles that matches your issue and find the most appropriate one.  In PubMed, on the top right corner of the page you can click on full text links.  In Web of Science, the full-text link is usually located on the top left corner of the page. After clicking the full-text link you may click through a series of windows to download the pdf of the article.

Examples of journals that frequently feature NHANES results include the Journal of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, American Journal of Public Health, Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report (MMWR), Journal of the American Medical Association, and Journal of Nutrition Education and Behavior. However, you do not need to restrict your selection to these journals.

Select one peer-reviewed paper that reports about nutrition that has application to public health nutrition practice. This means the article must have to do with both diet and health in a population. Look under the method section for specific measurements for quantifying dietary intake and health outcome.

For a paper to meet the criterion of being an analysis of NHANES data, the participant recruitment section in the Methods section needs to specify that the study participants came from NHANES. Plus, the only data used in the article can be from NHANES – no other sources. For example, the two abstracts below were found when searching for “NHANES” on PubMed. Note that Abstract A uses the NHANES sample as the study population, however Abstract B does not.

ABSTRACT A. METHODS: Data were analyzed from the 2001-2002 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) conducted on a nationally representative sample of the U.S. population. This study focused on adults aged 20 years or older who were both interviewed and examined (n =5027). [Meets criterion of assignment]

ABSTRACT B. PARTICIPANTS AND DESIGN: A single 24-hour recall was collected from 48 male and 44 female Yup’ik Eskimos (aged 14 to 81 years), who resided in three villages in the Yukon Kuskokwim River Delta, AK, during September 2003. [Does not meet criterion of assignment]
