In your future advanced practice role, you will be managing integral processes in the health care system.
With an understanding of Systems Theory, describe how you will be able to impact an identified system problem in the health care system from your soon-to-be advanced practice registered nurse role.

Unit 1 Discussion 2 Main Post
Implementing nursing theories in a clinical setting is a complicated process. Using the system theory by Karl Ludwig in the skilled nursing facility (SNF) care setting is to understand the facility as a whole system instead of multiple departments. The multidisciplinary team working together creates a cohesive environment. Communication is organized in a way that is understandable for all departments. In a SNF, the laundry and housekeeping departments are as important as the kitchen and the therapy department. Nursing is the main focus of care in the facility, but without the other departments, the building would not operate (Anderson, 2016). The nursing department can be a symbiotic system or be thrown into complete chaos by any number of reasons. Complex Adaptive Leadership Model (CALM) was introduced for operating rooms as a concept of communication among staff. Earning the trust of the staff by transparent communication is the basis of the model (Chadwick, 2010). Respect for everyone’s opinion is key to successful outcomes for patient care. Gone are the days of the dictator militarized nursing director. The best practice is to be an all-inclusive team where leadership is supported by the employees because of actions of the director not just words. The leadership style of a director that works with this current climate of nursing care facilities is someone who can incorporate transformational leadership practices that include democratic styles, autocratic styles, and for systems that are working, lassie faire styles (Fischer, 2017). Someone who takes into account the people and processes and use those to accomplishes necessary changes.

System theory involves a multi-disciplinary approach of systems. These systems are interrelated groups, interdependent parts that can be natural or human-made. Each system has its structure and purpose (Anderson, 2016). Nurses can use this technique to guide care, education, and research, by using concepts and constructs from established nursing theories. Although there are many different nursing theories, they all can be used to guide professional practice models, thus allowing nursing leaders to model the application of such theories into practice.
As you mentioned, practicing effective communication is important in healthcare. Written and verbal communication is widely used in healthcare, in every department. The Complex Adaptive Leadership Model promotes culture change and promote productive conflict (Adler & Koehn, 2016). The concepts and relationships presented in this model reflect real-world situations and provide strategies for leadership and team development (Adler & Koehn, 2016) This example is a good way to use a system theory to change a health system problem. Leadership can use the method to become more of a shared dynamic and concern of all, rather than a specific role.
