The Great Depression of 1929-1939 had a devastating effect on the people of Canada. Look at this time period and provide a picture of the impact of the Depression on the people and western Canada in particular.

1. Writing With a Thesis
All good writing has a statement, theme or main point that you are trying to
persuade your reader to accept. If you can keep this basic idea in mind, you
should be better prepared to tackle writing assignments of any length. A
coherent paragraph begins with a topic sentence that introduces the idea to
be developed. Similarly, a coherent essay begins with an introductory
paragraph that establishes the direction to be followed by the entire essay.
The opening paragraph of the essay should present your main idea as
effectively as possible. The topic sentence of the paragraph will also serve as
the thesis statement for the entire essay. Perhaps the most effective position
of the thesis statement is at the end of the paragraph.
Things to remember!
• A thesis is not a statement of fact.
• A thesis is not an announcement of your topic.
• A thesis is not a vague generalization.
• Stake out a position to defend. The reader will know that you have a
definite position and that you are willing to defend it.
2. The Body or Proof
The Body or Proof is the major portion of this document. You build the bulk
of the essay through the use of standard paragraphs. Each paragraph should
have a beginning, middle and an end. It is up to the writer to make the
paragraphs flow smoothly, to make one idea lead or connect with the next.
Remember, it is in the proof that you provide the detailed information, which
proves your thesis.
3. The Conclusion
The final part of the essay is the conclusion. Begin the conclusion by restating
your thesis. You do not need to add any new ideas; you simply summarize and
emphasize the important points of your essay.

iii. Write the thesis Statement. (The information that you find might not
support your original thesis, so leave it until you have finished a rough draft
of your proof)
