1- Background and Rationale
I have chosen Theme 3, the Global Challenge as I am wanting to apply academic rigour to real world problems; In this case I would be critically discussing the effect that Covid-19 has had on working from home and the typical office culture in UK businesses. In my project I will be evaluating the many decisions and the reasoning behind why working from home could be the new ‘norm’ for UK businesses and I will be able to recommend actions based upon literature, reports and other key research. Of the 17 sustainable development goals I will be focusing on Good health and wellbeing and decent work and economic growth.
The issues my research project would apply to are very present in the current socio-economic climate of the UK. Covid-19 has left millions of people in the UK without jobs, without job prospects or many other possibilities. Research suggests the Governments Furlough scheme that has been put in place to protect jobs has prevented many people from being made redundant and unemployed. The latest figures saw a second increase in the number of redundancies to 227,000. This is the highest level since 2009 which was also the last time there was a major economic downturn.
The element I will be focusing on with my research Is the effectiveness of working from home and my research would be particularly interesting to Management operatives and those people in charge of the business and the workforce, they could use my research and similar research to understand the possibility of flexible working. This research project will enable people to understand the short and long-term implications that Covid-19 has had on the United Kingdom. This literature will explore many concerning issues such as mental health, economic factors and typical working culture.
