Abstract (brief, tight) overview of the project and recommendations (100 -150 words). See next file for an example of a well-written abstract from one of our students.
Introduction (4-5 pages) (CHAPTER 1)
- Statement of the problem (example: the direct relationship between socio-eco status and performance)
- Critical definitions (do this once in the introductory section; there is no need to re-visit if done this well in the first place)
- Preliminary, brief review of evidence of the problem including data showing the relationship (for example, the percent of well-off students who complete high school versus poorer students)
- What you will do in the memo
- Review of secondary and primary sources of information (government stats on income, school completion/performance would be primary data) in order to:
- Analyze what is known about this relationship and “best-practices” (of cities, states, the nation, school districts) to address the problem
- Make Recommendations (for policymakers in government, school districts etc.) to remediate the problem
Literature Review (6-7 pages) (CHAPTER 2)
- More complete analysis (than Introduction which gives a very brief overview) of what we know about the problem, evidence that it exists and approaches to ameliorate the problem
Discussion and Recommandations (5-6 pages) (CHAPTER 3)
You would discuss:
- Your “take-aways” from your analysis of secondary and primary sources
- Your recommendations (for policymakers in government, school districts etc.)
