Summary of the article:
The article covers of a study conducted in India, seeking to examine associations between
oral hygiene habits, diet, smoking and chewing tobacco and drinking alcohol with the risk of
occurrence of oral cancer. Hypothesizing that poor oral hygiene habits independent elevated the
risk of oral cancer, the researchers evaluated the extent to which tobacco (a known major risk
factor) modified the association between oral hygiene and oral cancer. A case-control study
design model was used in the study in Pune, India with data collected through data extraction
from medical records, face-to-face interviews, anthropometry and intra-oral examinations (based
on a composite oral hygiene scoring chart). 187 incident oral cancer cases and 240 randomly
selected controls were involved in the study
The findings from the study was that poor oral hygiene, defined from the study as having
dental checkup while only in pain, topical application of Mishra on the gums, bleeding gums,
infrequent cleaning of teeth and missing teeth, increased the risk of getting oral cancers above
the risk in those with good oral hygiene. However, from the confounding influences by tobacco
and other dietary influences, the association is not as simplistic as the study had hoped to
achieve. The conclusion of the study was that refraining from alcohol and tobacco use,
observance of good oral hygiene and diets, rich in antioxidant vitamins and trace elements, are
protective against oral cancers.
