This is a guidance of term project in MGT 545 (Global Corporate Strategy & Policy). Below are

Section I: Select and Summarize the Company (10 points)
Each student should choose a company from the S&P 500 list and provide a summary of the
company’s:
(1) Vision – Identify the present vision of the corporation and specify whether it is explicitly
stated or implied.
(2) Mission – Identify the present mission of the corporation and specify whether it is explicitly
stated or implied.
(3) Objectives – Identify the present objectives of the corporation. Both financial and strategic
objectives should be identified, and
(4) Strategies – Identify and present the strategies of the company. Strategies should be presented
in order of their hierarchical significance (corporate-level strategy and business-level strategy).
Section II: Corporate Governance (5 points)
Provide a summary of the company’s governance mechanisms:
(1) Board of directors – Describe the size of the board, the percentage of independent
directors on board, various committees, and the Chairman of Board of Directors.
(2) Top executives – Describe the top management team, including the CEO and other top
executives.
Section III: External Environment Analysis: Opportunities & Threats (15 points)
The external environment analysis should include:
(1) General environment analysis: PESTEL
(2) Industry environment analysis: using Porter’s five competitive forces
a.Threat of new entrants
b.Bargaining power of buyers
c.Threat of substitute products or services
d.Bargaining power of suppliers
e.Competitive rivalry
Note: Rank each on a scale of 1 to 5; 1=Weak; 5=Strong.
(3) Driving Forces – Identify 3 or 4 driving forces outside the control of the firm that can
profoundly change the environment in which the corporation competes.
(4) Competitor Analysis – Cite main competitors with any major threats
(5) Key Success/Failure Factors – Identify the major factors that will result in the success or
failure of any firm in the industry
(6) Industry Attractiveness – Describe how attractive the industry is.
Section IV: Internal Organization Analysis: Strengths & Weaknesses (15 points)
The internal organization analysis should include:
(1) Corporate Structure – Identify the present corporate structure and provide an
organizational chart. The summary of corporate structure should discuss decision-making
authority (centralized or decentralized). When presenting the organizational chart,
describe the form of the organizational structure (e.g., M-form, functional etc).
(2) Corporate Resources – Describe the strengths and weakness of each function:
a. Marketing – Review marketing and analyze the strengths or weaknesses.
b. Finance – Describe financial resources and provide a summary of financial ratios,
at least including liquidity (e.g., current ratio), profitability (e.g., Return on
Investment, and Return on Equity), Leverage (eg., Debt to Equity Ratio), Others
(e.g., Price/Earnings Ratio)
c. Operations – Analyze operational management and describe the strength or
weakness related to HR, Quality Management, Process and Capacity Design,
Location, HR, Supply Chain Management, Inventory, and
Reliability/Maintenance
(3) Summary of Internal Factors: Identify any of core competencies
Section V: Analysis of Strategic Factors (20 points)
After having a SWOT analysis, re-asses the company’s current strategies. Identify two major
strategic issues that could destroy the company if not addressed appropriately. Explicitly list the
issues and each issue should begin with a question in the form “How will Company XX
specifically address issue YY?”. These strategic issues may be caused by the new emerged
opportunities/threats or the company’s intention to build its strengths or mitigate its weaknesses.
This section of analysis should include:
(1) A summary of SWOT analysis;
(2) A brief review of Vision, Mission, and Objectives, addressing whether and how to
modify if necessary;
(3) An explanation of two strategic issues identified;
(4) An analysis of each strategic issue’s antecedents and consequences if the issue is not
solved.
Section VI: Strategic Alternatives and Recommended Strategy (20 points)
Based on strategic issued identified in the previous section, list strategic alternatives on:
(1) Corporate strategies (at least two);
(2) Business strategies (Generic Strategies or Competitive Strategies).
Provide justification for the recommended corporate-level and business-level strategies.
Section VII: Implementation (10 points)
Briefly assess three of the following components of implementing strategy:
(1) Installing Support/Control Systems to Carry out Strategic Roles
(2) Trying Rewards to Achievement of Key Strategic Targets
(3) Shaping Corporate Structure to Fit Strategy
(4) Building an Innovative/Entrepreneurial Organization
