Television and Technology
Instructions:
Students are to provide a short and concise response to one of the readings that demonstrates a) that they have closely read the text (by referring to specific ideas, examples, or arguments, either through paraphrases or direct quotations of the reading); b) that they understood the ideas, examples, or arguments they have chosen to focus upon, and could explain or summarize them in their own words; and c) that they could specify the reading’s relationship or connection to their own lives, through an attempt to compare the ideas, examples, or arguments with their own practices and experiences (either to support or critique the reading).
Choose one of the readings from May 5-May 19. (Note: do not write on the readings from May 3.)
Identify one or more ideas, examples, or arguments from the reading that you think are important to an understanding of it.
Explain those ideas, examples, or arguments in your own words (using paraphrases and quotations where appropriate, and providing proper citations if necessary).
Clarify why you chose to focus on these ideas, examples, or arguments in particular – what about them piqued your interest from the reading, or how you you see them as being centrally important to the reading.
Relate those ideas, examples, or arguments to your own experiences and practices, as a consumer, producer, observer, fan, and/or critic of pop culture, in order to specify whether or not you agree or disagree (or both) with the author(s) on the points they are making about film, television, advertising/consumerism, or music/subcultures.
