Team members from the Middle East

I lead an extremely diverse sixty staff from different background and different cultures. When
I first started my job as the deputy ambassador I thought of the need to understand the
diversity that is required in the embassy.

I learned that In the United States for example, people generally focus on the individual. Each
person has responsibilities, and it’s up to him or her to get the job done.
But in most other parts of the world, people are more group oriented. These cultures include
Asia, Latin America, and the Middle East. In these regions, the nation, organization, and family
come first. There is more emphasis on team collaboration, and groups share praise – or
blame.
Team members from the Middle East are much less likly to question their leader – even if the
leader is wrong. In this regard, egalitarian team members often see their role as pleasing the
boss, even if withholding are delaying bad news. This course thought me that it is very
important to understand the culture and the diversity in order to lead the team. I learned how
to deal with different culture not only from the course material but also from the activities and
the exercise we did everyday.

For example, when first took my diplomatic role as avice consul ten years ago at the consulate
of Qatra in Houston, I have committed so many mistakes when I thought might threatened my
diplomatic career. At first I was so hesitant and careful to start new project or new initiatives. I

realized that leaders should learn and innovate when they make mistakes. There are two main
aspect that I Learned when I was in Texas. First to rebuild trust in the face of failure. One of our
class meet at the class mentioned that when has was leading a team with big projects some
time they fail and he always takes the balm first without blaming his team members. That
saying resonate with me a lot I think it thought me a lesson that when employees witness a
leader taking accountability for mistakes in an open and transparent manner, even asking for
feedback to improve their work, they rebuild trust. This is one of the main skills of leadership
that I will apply in my upcoimg carre.

The second aspect is to share best practices. One of the most common complaints in
organizations today is a lack of effective communication and I found that in my embassy as
well. The first change I made in my organization right after I finished this course is to create a
new platform for collaboration and communication by using a smart phone application called
“basecamp”. It should allow and encourage effective communication among staff from
different department and sharing all the best practices from different department. It also
offers the ability to automate tasks and workflow and allows everyone to focus on what really
matter as well as. I do understand that change is not easy and some of the employees will be
hesitant to use this app. I learned much from the the technology adoption life cycle. While
some of the staff are the innovators who are more educated and more risk oriented, others
might be laggards who are seniors and very conservatives. I will be targeting those who are at
the first three quadrants of the cycle by building the trust on the on them and encourage them
to use he new system and by building the intrinsic motivation inside them where they should
