trade theory and economics more generally. The paper should be structured around the
following three general topics.
• Historical and Current Trade Dynamics: Cite reputable media sources, articles, or books
to explain the evolution of trade policy in this country. Does it belong to trade
agreements? Is it protectionist? Did it liberalize trade? If so, when and why? This
section should also include critical analysis (not just descriiption!) of statistics assembled
in the steps above. What can you infer from these statistics about the country’s historical
and current patterns of trade? Has it been running a trade surplus or deficit? etc.
• Diagnosis: This section identifies strengths and weaknesses in the country’s trade
competitiveness. Is trade acting to promote growth in this country? Is the country’s
export portfolio well diversified? Could the country do better by specializing in other
types of exports? You should explain how your diagnosis is supported by the empirical
evidence you compiled and by economic reasoning. You are encouraged to cite articles
to support your argument, though that is not a substitute for engaging with the data.
• Policy Advice: What can the country do to improve its competitiveness in international
markets? Propose specific policies.
• The paper should include 3-4 pages of double-spaced 12-point-font text (not counting the
space taken up by charts and graphs, which will probably add another 2-3 pages to the
length of the paper).
• Include a bibliography, using any standard and internally consistent citation style (this
means, at a minimum, you should cite the author, year of publication, title, and publisher
or periodical/journal). The date and/or URL should be included for news articles and
volume numbers should be included for journal articles.
• All charts and graphs should be clearly labeled and numbered (e.g., Figure 1. Descriiption
of the figure). Clearly label all axes. Specify units of measure. Pie charts should
indicate percentage shares in a legend or on the pie chart itself. All figures should be
easily readable and understandable without reference to the text.
• The graphs and charts should be located close to where they are first discussed in the text.
