Overview
For your final project, you will need to be able to fully interpret an analysis of
qualitative data using one- and two-way χ
2
tests. This activity will help prepare you to
complete this project successfully because you’ll get to practice the skill of interpreting
output from such tests.
Below are some two-way tables from the General Social Survey that look at the
relationship between individuals’ self-reported class identification (Lower, Working,
Middle, or Upper class) and whether they feel safe to walk at night in their
neighborhood (Yes or No).
One-Way Chi-Square Test
First, a one-way χ
2
test was performed to determine whether the proportions of people
who do and do not feel safe walking in their neighborhood at night is equal. Below is the
table and test statistic result.

One-way chi-square test result: χ2
(1) = 1609.99, p <.001
Two-Way Chi-Square Test
Second, a two-way χ
2
test was performed to determine whether subjective class and fear
of walking at night in one’s neighborhood are dependent on one another (that is, do
people in different classes have disproportionate levels of fear of walking at night in
their neighborhoods?). The table and test result are below.
Two-way chi-square test result: χ2
(3) = 104.5778, p <.001
