Sonny’s Blues Essay Sample

Sonny’s Blues, written by James Baldwin in 1957 and first published in Partisan Review, is a short story featuring two African American brothers living in Harlem. The plot revolves around their complicated relationship with each other and the painful repercussions of Sonny’s drug addiction.

The protagonist of the story is an unnamed narrator who learns that his younger brother Sonny has been arrested for heroin possession after reading a newspaper article. At this point he realizes how distant they’ve become since they were growing up together as children: “I could remember only too vividly what it had been like when I was a boy—the tense black streets, full at night with menacing strangers…and our own unnatural quietness inside the apartment which separated us from them…” Though both have gone on to opposite life paths, through his thoughts he can still relate to his brother’s situation yet feels powerless to help him due to “realities” such as race or class differences that keep them apart: “…no matter how hard we try there are moments—this being one—when all our separate struggles hit bottom and there isn’t any place left for us but just stand desperate against each other.” Despite these difficulties however the main character eventually decides that he must confront Sonny directly out of love (even if it means facing something about himself) despite not knowing exactly why: “But I didn’t know why; he seemed surrounded by an aura so dense you could hardly make out what lay beneath; rarely did I feel sure enough even speculation.”

The meeting between the two brothers does eventually occur but involves more than just confronting each other head-on; instead it becomes essential for understanding reconciling their past differences while also accepting themselves. For example during conversation Sonny introduces music into their discussion which helps create dialogues leading towards greater acceptance and allows them start communicating honestly with one another again: “We talked far less than we listened….It was almost as though everybody was listening simultaneously…” Music here acts as a bridge between characters allowing them establish common ground despite hardships faced before such connection existed within family dynamics.
