Sociology of Everyday Life

. Presentations
Your presentation should give a summary of one of the texts listed in the further reading for that week. Do not present the core reading article, which everyone must read and which we will discuss separately. You may want to focus on a particular question or aspect of the topic that you answer with reference to the text. Please include some criticisms or other personal response to the reading, and end with some questions for a class discussion. DO NOT just repeat material from the lecture or summarise the core reading, as this is boring for everyone! You must refer to your seminar presentation in the assessed essay. You must also submit your presentation slides/notes as an appendix to your essay, printed with the date showing from the correct week. This is to prove that you did it, and to ensure that every student takes equal responsibility for the presentations over the term.

2. Reading
This module handbook contains a long list of suggested readings for each week, but you may want to go beyond it and find something else interesting and relevant. There is also an electronic version of the reading list on Canvas, but please note that this is shorter and only contains the most essential texts. When preparing your essay, try to research it from a variety of sources, using the reading list (module handbook version) but going beyond it too. If you come across anything interesting (books, articles, websites, video clips) that you would like me to add to the reading list, please let me know!

Please try to read at least two items in preparation for each seminar. I have identified one key reading for each week, and these can be found on the Canvas site for this module. You MUST read this each week, and try to read one other thing too.

There is no required textbook for the course, but if you want to read one, here are three suggestions:

Making Sense of Everyday Life (by Susie Scott [2009] Cambridge: Polity). This was written by the module convenor and maps on to the weekly topics. It also introduces some of the theoretical perspectives we will be working with.
Understanding Everyday Life (edited by Tony Bennett and Diane Watson [2002] Oxford: Blackwell) provides an accessible overview and some items of reading that may be difficult to find elsewhere. There are some copies of this book in the library as well.
Watching the English (by Kate Fox [2014] London: Hodder & Stoughton. 2nd edition) is also very good, not to mention funny, and provides an accessible introduction to some of the topics we are covering.
