SMART Goal Reflection Journal 1 Instructions

Purpose: The purpose of this assignment is to reflect on your goal progress, analyze data and apply key psychology concepts to your SMART Goal. You will reflect on your experiences, data, and results in detail, comparing your actual results to your SMART Goal. You will write in detail to explain supports and obstacles that influenced your progress towards your goal. You will define and apply key concepts to your SMART Goal.

Skills: You will practice and develop a variety of skills as you write this essay.
• You will analyze SMART Goal data (thoughts, feelings, behaviors) to uncover patterns.
• You will update strategies for making progress towards your goals based on data.
• You will think critically, applying psychological theories and concepts to analyze your own behavior.
• You will develop awareness and intention around your daily habits.
• You will write about personal experiences in essay format using APA or MLA-style citations.
Part 1: Task: Write Reflection Journal One Essay
□ Summarize Your Goal: State your SMART Goal. Describe your experiences and results in detail.
□ State your SMART Goal including your specific strategies.
□ Describe any adjustments, if necessary, you made to your goal and/or strategies.
□ Compare your actual results to the initial SMART Goal plan you developed in your topic outline.
□ Explain at least two supports that are influencing your progress towards your SMART Goal.
□ Explain at least two obstacles that are influencing your progress towards your SMART Goal.
□ Describe at least one realistic update to a strategy to enhance your ability to achieve your goal.

□ Define and Apply Key Terms to Your Goal: Define and explain the relationship of the following four concepts to your SMART Goal experience. The course textbook is the only acceptable source for definitions. Use in-text citations for the definitions in either APA or MLA style. Describe a specific and concrete example of each concept. Then, describe how each concept applies to your SMART Goal.

Part 2: Submit a Snapshot of Data
□ Data: Submit one week’s worth of data on the variables you tracked (thoughts, feelings, behaviors).
□ Format: This data can be a picture of a handwritten chart, an Excel spreadsheet, an image of journal entries, a summary of data from an app, etc.
□ *Check in with me if you want to ensure that the format of your data is acceptable.
□ Be sure to submit your data below the References or Works Cited page on a separate page.
Part 3: Task: Follow Formatting Requirements
□ Write in essay format (include introduction, main idea or body, and conclusion paragraphs)
□ “I” (i.e. Me, Myself, & Mine) language is acceptable and encouraged.
□ Passive language, “you”, is not acceptable.
□ Include an outline heading with: Name, Professor Name, Course Name and Section.
□ The outline must be typed using 12-point Times New Roman or Arial font.
□ The outline spacing should be 1.5 – 2 – spaced.
□ The outline length should be 3 page minimum to 5 pages maximum.
□ This outline should be free from grammar and spelling errors, and clearly understandable by the reader.
□ This outline must be submitted in an acceptable format: .doc, .docx, .pdf, .rtf, .odt.
□ In-text citations: APA or MLA Style in-text citations for directly quoted definition. (missing: plagiarism)
□ Full – text references: APA or MLA Style Reference page for textbook (missing: plagiarism)
Part 4: Review Checklist and Grade Yourself Using the Rubric on Blackboard
□ Use the instructions as a checklist as you complete and proofread your essay.
□ Check your essay against the rubric on Blackboard before submitting it.
□ Consider having a peer or the ILC review your work for spelling and grammar edits prior to submission.
□ Plagiarism Policy: Review your essay to ensure it is in keeping with the plagiarism policy. Plagiarism will result in a score of zero and academic penalties as determined by the Syllabus and WTCC policy.

When working towards goals, one major concept to consider is reinforcement, which the textbook Psychology in Your Life defines as: “The additional or removal of a stimulus to increase the probability that a behavior will be repeated” (Grison and Gazzaniga, 2017, p. 214). Negative reinforcement is basically rewarding a behavior by removing something bad, or in my case, painful. Within my SMART Goal, I experienced negative reinforcement with stiffness and soreness in my shoulder. The more I do physical therapy, the less my shoulder feels stiff and sore. This motivates me to get started when I don’t feel like doing my physical therapy exercises.
