Principles of Sociology, SOC H101

Research Paper Assignment, Fall 2022

I will review your rough draft and award up to 10 points for good effort and comprehensiveness.

Introduce the topic you have chosen. Locate a current article, in-print or off the internet, from a reputable source (see below) The easiest way to find an article is to search The New York Times, Baltimore Sun, or other reputable newspapers for your topic.  Locate a story about people experiencing your issue. This is the foundation of your paper…the news story that people heard/read that brought the issue to the forefront.

  1. Choose 2 peer reviewed journal articles on the topic you have selected. Such as: racism, police brutality, abortion, the death penalty, right to life, sexual abuse, bullying, stalking, domestic abuse, cyberstalking, poverty, human trafficking, welfare reform, prison gangs, discrimination, the impact of technology, or a criminal case that reflects deviance.
  2. Provide research on the subject.  Be thorough! At minimum 3 resources including your textbook (for a total of 3!).

You must provide details about the topic (i.e., define it, tell me the prevalence of it, give statistics, describe the dynamics of the topic – for example … the death penalty is a controversial issue …. why? … domestic violence has certain features about it, such as the fact that women often stay with their abusers … why? … what is rape culture? What are the myths about rape and/or sexual assault?

Be curious.  You will need to do research in order to complete this section of the assignment and you will need to have at least two peer reviewed sources for this research.

  1. Conclusion: Write a paragraph about your thoughts, feelings, and judgments on the topic and/orarticle – your social reality.  This should be in first person (i.e., I feel … this make me angry … I am horrified by …).  You can tell me what you learned or give a summary, but find a proper way to close your paper.

REMEMBER the following ~ APA formatting required. Please watch the links on our Blackboard class and/or use https://owl.purdue.edu/owl/research_and_citation/apa_style/apa_formatting_and_style_guide/general_format.html

  1. Cover Page: The first page of your paper should be a cover sheet that includes a title that communicates the content of your paper, your name, date, title of the class, and any other information you feel is necessary.
  2. 2nd page: Abstract (∼up to 250 words): An abstract for the paper that is no longer than 250 words. It should be single-spaced and should be placed immediately preceding the introduction.
  3. Introduction (pages 1–2 pages): This section should contain the article that caught your attention about the sociological issue and then the discussion about why you chose this topic, what interested you about the article.  You will discuss your specific research topic, any background necessary for the reader (e.g., historical context), and a short introductory explanation of why your topic is sociologically relevant and interesting, and how it contributes to existing literature.
  4. Literature Review (pages 3-5 pages): This section should contain a summary and synthesis of existing research related to your topic (the 2 peer reviewed journal articles you chose) and an explanation of how your topic contributes to existing research, either theoretically or empirically.
  5. Conclusion

Additional tips for writing locating the research.

  • Do not just choose the first 5 sources that you find; make sure that they are relevant to your research question and topic.
  • Ask yourself about your topic. What is missing?
  • Edit, edit, edit. You should spend a fair amount of time putting this together and editing as much as possible. If you do a really good job on this portion, it’s likely you’ll be able to paste it into your final paper with minimal changes! Take it very seriously.

Remember:

  • Use the APA formatting
  • Cite all sources.
  • You will need to use at least 4 or moresources for this paper.
    • The news article, 2 peer reviewed journal articles, and then your textbook
