In the field of research, qualitative and quantitative methodologies have possible
differences. There are differences in the methods, paradigms and the interpretive
frameworks of the research study. Other differences include the ontological,
epistemological, and the methodological perspectives, that is, the nature of reality
(ontology), the truth or legitimate knowledge (epistemology) and how a researcher finds
out knowledge (methodology). Below is a discussion of the differences based on these
aspects.
The two most popular forms of research are qualitative and quantitative
methodology. The qualitative methodology is grounded in the interpretive paradigm
while the quantitative methodology is grounded in the positivist paradigm. The
quantitative research depends on the collection of the quantitative data, for instance,
numerical data. Qualitative research depends on the collection of the qualitative data
like non-numerical data (Antwi,  Kwadwo, and Kasim Hamza). Quantitative research
assumes that cognition and behavior are mostly predictable and explainable while the
qualitative research assumes that behavior is being fluid, dynamic and changing over
time.  The quantitative research attempts to operate under the belief of objectivity while
the qualitative research assumes that reality is socially constructed, that is socially
constructed norms are predecessors of social behavior.
In regard to ontological issues, the positivist paradigm seeks to explore the
social reality based on the philosophical ideas of Auguste Comte. According to his
argument, observation and reason are the best ways of understanding the human
behavior and true knowledge can be based on an experience obtained through
observation and experiment. Its ontology considers reality to be independent. On the
other hand, the interpretive paradigm believes in observation and interpretation,
meaning, to observe is to collect information while interpretation is to make meaning of
the information by drawing inferences (Antwi,  Kwadwo, and Kasim Hamza). The
paradigm stresses the need to analyze and understand the way the world is from the
subjective experiences.
