Using examples from the September 30 course readings and from the film In and Out of Africa – (class on September 30), this response paper enables students to analyze and illustrate the anthropological debates that continue regarding the concepts of authenticity, tradition, pre-modern and modern with regard to arts, crafts, and expressive and visual culture.

Using specific references to the theories and examples in ONE of the course readings on this topic (September 30) and to the film In and Out of Aftica answer BOTH of the following questions in your essay/response paper.

Briefly explain what is meant by the dichotomy between pre-modern and modern arts and identify other terms that have developed to categorize how we understand non-Western visual culture or arts. How, by whom, and when did these distinctions arise in Euro-American social science scholarship?
Discuss some of the ways that different people in the arts field those involved in making, selling, buying, collecting, or displaying non-Western objects think about the value and meaning of these objects.
You can also discuss, how different people involved in the arts have tried to reposition or recontextualize the meaning of these objects to suit their belief or advantage. These art players may include: art historians, museum curators, anthropologists, collectors, art dealers.

NOTE: The information to answer these questions is contained in the readings and in the film.

Format:

Length: 1.5 2 pages (approximately 500-600 words)

Style: Typed, double-spaced, font 12 pt., black ink, stapled left corner, typing on one-side of the page only.
