select a topic that interests you, but keep in mind you must show a
need for more research in your topic area. To get some ideas, reflect
back to Module 1 when you were asked to browse through various
health topic areas including childhood obesity, the built environment
and health, tobacco control, healthy eating, infectious disease,
physical activity, HIV/AIDS, diabetes, emergency preparedness, and a
host of other topics (Make sure you narrow your topic down so that it
is something that can be examined through research. For example,
diabetes is a very broad topic area. You could narrow down that topic
and focus on diabetes among African-Americans. This is just an
example, there are many possibilities.)
Your research proposal should integrate concepts from the first four
modules and include the following components:
1. Research Problem
1. Provide a detailed discussion of a problem in the field of
health which warrants research.
Be sure to discuss literature (at least three
sources) relevant to the problem (For example,
you might want to include national statistics for
the Centers for Disease Prevention to show the
severity of the problem).
2. Review of the Literature
1. Discuss past studies that have been conducted in your
topic area.
Include a discussion of at least two research
studies that have used either quantitative,
qualitative, or a mixed-method approach to
examine your topic.

(if applicable), and results of the studies
3. Purpose of Research Study
1. Explain the purpose of your research study
2. Discuss any research questions you would like to
answer with your study.
4. Research Justification
1. Provide a research justification (why is more researched

3. To whom might the results of your study be important,
in what way and how?
5. Theoretical Framework
1. Identify an appropriate theory to help guide your study.
2. Describe the components of the theory and how the
theory will be useful to guide your study
3. You might want to consider providing examples of
studies in your topic area that has used the theory you
