To what extent was the outbreak of violence in August 1969 inevitable?
1500 words +/- 10%. You can use any standard form of citation you like.
You should weigh up what might have made it inevitable and what might have made it avoidable
Czechoslovakia and Ulster are born to trouble as the sparks fly upwards. Wrote Sir James Craig, first prime minister of Northern Ireland, in 1921. (Its a paraphrase of Job 5:7 Yet man is born unto trouble, as the sparks fly upward). Whether or not Northern Ireland, from its inception, was going to eventually descend into violence, is one question, but remember that the paper question relates to a very specific date August 1969.
The more sources you use, the better so long as its helping answer the question. You might want to look at Chapter Two and Chapter Six of Official Irish Republicanism (its on blackboard with the powerpoints), the powerpoints, Armed Struggle, the articles we read, etc.
1500 words is actually very short. Do NOT think this means it is easier than 3000 or 6000 words. It means there is no space for waffle. It all needs to be concise and to the point.
Do not use weasel words (such as some people say. Or it is believed WHO says it/believes it?, obviously. its not obvious , demonstrate it)
