Writing Prompt: Set during the Harlem Renaissance, Nella Larsen’s Passing tells a story of an African American woman who passes for white in an effort to have a better life, one absent of racial discrimination and prejudice. Although racial passing may not be as prevalent today, nearly 100 years after the Harlem Renaissance Period, many of us “pass” in other ways. We may pretend to be happier, more educated, more compassionate, more pious, or healthier than we actually are. Write an essay that discusses ways in which you have passed for something you are not. What were some of the benefits? Disadvantages? What did passing in this way reveal to you about who you truly are? Be sure to make connections to at least one character from the text throughout your piece. (Please do not write about a time that you passed for a different age.)
