I am doing a masters in international management and I am doing a thesis proposal and this is what I did so far :

1- Title: overseas risks in international businesses, case of HSBC bank in France

3- Introduction (300 words)
Today even small companies are looking to expand their business globally. Operating on an international scale, open new opportunities for the business: entry to new markets which leads to an increase in the customer base and in revenues and decrease costs. Therefore, companies don’t hesitate to take any opportunity to gain a foot in a new market without taking into consideration the risks that will come hand by hand with this opportunity. Many international companies lost millions of dollars due to international business risks.
HSBC is one of the one of the largest banks and leader in the financial services worldwide. According to Wikipedia “HSBC Holdings plc is a British multinational investment bank and financial services holding company. It was the 6th largest bank in the world by 2020, and the largest in Europe, with total assets of US$2.715 trillion (as of August 2020). Back in 2000, HSBC, bought CCF France to enter the French Market quickly and easily, CCF was one of the most profitable banks in France, founded in 1894, with 650 branches, 1 million customers and manages €57 billion in investments. It was the first major French bank to fall into “foreign hands” but the fact that HSBC France was offered for sale back in August 2020, lead us to believe that the bank didn’t perform well in the French market. The price will be catastrophic as the buyer is asking HSBC to inject 500 million Euros before they buy it for an amount equal to 1$ (one dollar)!!!! This huge amount to be paid by HSBC represent the tax that a company might pay due to overseas risks that can be so harmful to its business reputation. Those risks include cross cultural risks, commercial risks, currency financial risks, political risks etc…those risks have a great impact on the ability of the company to perform in the new market and if the overseas risks were not carefully considered, identified and mitigated properly and can lead to complete failure.
