Essay #2: Racism against Black people in the U.S. today.
Critical Race Theory is the theory that race is a social construct embedded in our cultural systems, including our legal, political, and economic systems. You watched the documentary called the “13th,” which explores the connections between racism in the U.S. and the development of our prison system. In addition, you read a chapter on race and ethnicity and watched a lecture. Use all these resources in addition to this article to build your essay.
Topic of Essay: Discuss racism against African Americans in our society (U.S. and New York City) historically and today. Use the following sources:
1) The documentary film, the “13th.”
2) The readings and sources for Week 5, Part 1 on Race and Ethnicity.
3) The website called “Why Teaching Black Lives Matters.”
4) Your own observations and experiences in New York City.
Try to find examples of racism within various aspects of our cultural system, such as our legal, economic, political, and entertainment organizations. Then, show how these manifestations are part of the historical roots of racism.
You will be graded on your ability to identify current racism and integrate these issues with the historical aspects of racism. You have much more freedom with this essay than in the previous essay. You may bring in examples from your own life, your family, and your community. Just remember, you must focus your discussion on racism against African Americans. Do not go off-topic and discuss other minority groups. Doing so will dramatically lower your grade.
Write the essay. The essay should be written professionally and cleanly. You can use any editing style that you feel comfortable with or have used in the past. A bibliography is required only if you bring in new sources.
You are allowed two sentences of quotation! Make sure you understand the meaning of the word- sentence. Your overall score will be lowered by 10 points for each additional sentence of quotations.
The essay should be a minimum of 1200 words. It would be best if you drafted an essay long enough to complete the assignment thoroughly. I would recommend an essay that is a minimum of three pages long.
Submitting your paper for grading:
You will access “Turnitin” in the class Blackboard. Upload your essay to this program. I will not accept the essay in any other form. The program will not work well with Apple Safari.
Do not copy text from another source. This website allows a comparison of your work with internet sources, published articles, and the papers of millions of other students throughout the U.S. and Europe. The information is private and can only be accessed by the student and your professor. It is a straightforward program. After the analysis, Turnitin will submit a score and list similar sources. If the score is over 18%, I will review the paper carefully for plagiarized materials.
