Rationale-
Mental health disorders are often mistaken for one another. With similar traits linking to one another it can be hard for psychiatrists to diagnose the correct mental health disorder this leaves the question are people being diagnosed and treated correctly? A recent study was based on Autism being misdiagnosed with borderline personality disorder, finding the results that people with either autism or personality disorders have a big overlap in related traits and behaviours.

Background information-
Autism (ASC) is a disorder which affects someone’s ability to communicate and interacted with other people. It impacts the nervous system and has many symptoms, symptoms include communication difficulty, obsessive interests, repetitive behaviours.

– How is it diagnosed
A personality disorder (PSD) is a pattern of unhealthy behaviour, thinking and functioning. Like autism someone with a personality disorder will struggle perceiving and relating to other people in situations. Both ASC and PSD struggle to keep relationships with family, friends and colleges, maintain a job, adapt to change, they both are also on the social communication disorder spectrum, given all these traits it can trap the persons dreams and goals widely, this makes it vital for disorders so similar like these to be diagnosed correctly. Both require different treatments, if the person is receiving treatment for a disorder, they do not have it could make their disorder worse, bring on mood disorders such as depression, anxiety, it can also encourage aggression. The person may feel anger towards themselves or others not understanding themselves and why they feel and act the way they do. Having techniques and ways to deal and calm the disorder will make it easier for them to live their day to day life.

– How can it effect the people around them – they do not understand- not sure how to deal with it- how to communicate appropriately- can feel annoyed towards them from their behaviours.

When wrongly diagnosed patients will not get the right support and resources to live everyday life, in fact having a disorder wrongly diagnosed can make it not only harder for the patient but also for their families. Statistics from BMJ Quality & Safety, show that 1 in 20 adults get misdiagnosed this equal to 12 million per year in America adults that seek medical care as outpatients get misdiagnosed, results state that half of the misdiagnosis cause serve harm. “It’s very serious,” says CBS News chief medical correspondent Dr. Jon LaPook. “When you have numbers like 12 million Americans, it sounds like a lot — and it is a lot. It represents about 5 percent of the outpatient encounters.”
