Project Environment and Planning (PEP) Module

Project Environment and Planning (PEP) Module 20592
The Assignment
1. Submission deadlines:
Group 1 deadline: 20 November 2020
Group 2 deadline: 04 December 2020
Group 3 deadline: 11 December 2020
The release dates for the marks will be available on moodle (in the online “Dropbox” section for this
module). Normally this is 20 working days following the date of submission. However, the release
date takes into account the end of term and the University shutdown for the Christmas vacation
2. How to submit your work
This is by electronic submission through moodle (turnitin) where you will upload the
assignment in the Dropbox set up for this purpose on the module site by 2355 pm, otherwise
the system will time you out. When you upload your work remember to press the “submit”
button which will then automatically generate an electronic receipt as proof of the date and
time of submission.
When submitting your assignment, please include your student number as the file name, for
example:”123456_report”. This is important to do as the work is marked anonymously.
Please include your student number in the “footer or header” of your document. We’ve had
problems in previous years when the student ID could not be found anywhere in the assignment,
so we had no idea who to assign the mark to.
2. Assignment Case Study
This is a single assessment. It is based on the Norwegian Megaproject: “E39 Coastal Highway
Route”. A link to this project is included on Moodle to help you but you will also need to engage with
further research and reading on the project for further context. You will have the opportunity to
critique current practice in project management drawing on any of the concepts from this module to
provide justification for your answers for this assessment which must be supported by evidence from
the literature (academic books and journal articles). You may also cite from professional bodies and
Institute websites e.g. Association of Project Management (APM), Project Management Institute
(PMI), Chartered Management Institute (CMI), Government and Industry websites but there must be
a balance with the use of academic references. Use of ‘wikis’ is to be avoided.
3. This assignment covers all learning outcomes (LOs) for this Module which are:
1. Critically review the environment and context in which projects are conceived and realised.
2. Evaluate the employment of project management in introducing change and delivering benefits.

3. Review and develop project lifecycles and the overall framework and processes of project
4. Analyse and review methods for defining the scope/deliverables of a project and project

project environment.
4. Assignment Objectives (Your Task)-
1. Critically evaluate the factors (external to the project) which may impact on the continuity of
the Norwegian “E39 Coastal Highway Route” project, using an environmental analysis tool to
help illustrate your answer (LO1), supported by evidence from the literature.
2. To what extent are the benefits of this project likely to be realised in this current time of
uncertainty? Conduct a Stakeholder analysis for the E39 project and critically assess the
potential benefits (expected advantages and sustainable legacies to be delivered by the
project) and any dis-benefits (negative consequences). You may use a comparative example
from a project known to you, to help justify your answer (LO2).
3. Critically evaluate which project lifecycle model(s) could be used or adapted as a suitable
framework for planning the E39 project. Justify your answer supported by the literature
4. Evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of the project requirements (or scope) of the E39
project? In your opinion is this project too ambitious? Justify your answer based on the
literature and examples from other projects (LO4).
5. In your opinion what would be the success criteria for this project? How would you evaluate
them? Use the evidence from the literature to justify your answer (LO5).
6. Explain quality management issues that could affect the project outcome, in terms of
compliance with quality standards (LO6).
5. Assignment format:

structure with a contents page, headings, sub-headings, page numbers, an introduction, main body
of the work covering objectives 1 to 6, conclusion, list of References and Appendices.
All new students who have started this academic year 2020/2021 should use APA 7 for

continue to do so.

To avoid plagiarism which is an automatic fail, you must ensure that it is your own work and all the
sources you use within your work are fully cited. Do also ensure when quoting directly from sources
that you use indentation or quotation marks (as appropriate) and cite the page number. All your
sources should be listed in a reference list in accordance with APA 7th edition (or APA
