Program designed to help survivors in a school
For this assignment, you’ll write a research paper of a minimum of 500 words (you may go over the word count) in response to the additional details that have been learned since the shooting. You’ll use APA formatting for all quotations and a reference page. SCENARIO Shots were fired at your local middle school. There were fatalities and panicked parents showed up at the school with the local media. You developed a crisis intervention plan to determine the cause of the shooting, dealt with the media and the parents, and worked to stop the violence. It is now a few days later and details of the incident are becoming clearer. It has been learned that the shooter, a boy named John, was bullied most of his life. John’s mother abandoned him when he was 3 and the one adult in his life who cared for him died when he was 7. This left John at the mercy of his father, who was an alcoholic and drug addict. His father abused and demeaned him, leaving him for days on end without food or heat. The other kids in school had made fun of him for years because his clothes were ill-fitting and rarely clean. Now 13 and tired of being hungry, cold, and miserable, he took his father’s rifle and first killed his father, who he considered to be the source of most of his troubles. Then, feeling empowered, he went to the school for additional payback. Before ending his own life, John killed 14 students and 3 teachers, and wounded 5 more people. Your task now is to set up a program to help the survivors deal with the pain, anger, confusion, and guilt that John left in his tragic wake.
