Most classes will have 2 to 3 presenters. Each class will begin with my introduction to the issues we are discussing that week.
You may not get the exact reading or week that is your best choice, but participation is important for all weeks and you may learn more from a new topic or author.
There may have to be some flexibility in scheduling to make way for guest speakers and for contingencies.
Student presentations (not exceeding 30 minutes for each presenter) will be on the assigned readings. Many times two presenters will work on the same article. If so, divide the reading into two sections but do work together on your organization and final questions.
Part of what makes good presentation is the ability to stimulate discussion. Therefore, please avoid just reading from a script, and try to present ideas and raise questions for the engagement of others.
Presentations should:
-introduce the context of the article. This would include locating the author’s background and theoretical perspective and anything else you think the class should know.
-include a brief summary of the author’s main points and arguments.
– raise key questions for discussion, and any controversies implied by the material;
– critically analyze the texts (for example: what is your evaluation of the author’s points, method, and presentation.
-create at least one example of your own to illustrate what the author is discussing, and ask the class to come up with examples of their own.
-identify anything you found unclear or misguided in the article, and tell what you like and what you did not.
– conclude with at least two discussion questions for the class to consider. Email these to me for possible inclusion as forum questions.
-email me your notes with your examples, any sources you refer to or url’s of clips, etc. These can be rough notes, not a formal summary.
-Have fun with it. Make it lively without sacrificing academic integrity.
