Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy to Treat Internet Addiction Disorder
Background
Brandon is a 19-year-old college student presenting with internet addiction disorder, also
known as problematic internet use. Brandon is in his first year of college at a university five
hours away from his hometown and family. He reports general feelings of loneliness as well as
considerable social anxiety. He is friendly with his roommate but reports that his roommate is
outgoing and easefully social in a way that he is not. He has gone out a few times with his
roommate to club meetings and parties but reports that in these settings, he feels isolated and
socially incompetent. After these events, he typically wishes he had not gone and ruminates
about his lack of skill when it comes to social settings. He reports that after a month of trying
these social engagements with his roommate, he has become very resistant to new activities,
claiming that it is a waste of his time. Now, when his roommate tries to get him to go out with
him, he cites feelings of illness in order to stay home.
