Using a comparative method of analysis, examine the process of modern state
formation and its development in one of the following groups of state. What
conclusions can you come up with?
a) United States and Canada
b) France and Britain
c) Cuba and Chile

g) Algeria and Morocco
h) China and Russia
i) South Korea and Argentina
j) South Africa and Mozambique

Using a comparative method of analysis, critically examine the state of:
‘democracy’ or democratization process (depending on the country);
racial justice and discrimination;
the rule of law;
social capital and human development;
approaches to pandemics;
OR ‘development’ (mainly with respect to underdeveloped and developing
countries) in two or three countries of your choice. Make sure that you choose your
countries relevant to the topic of your paper. If in doubt talk to your TA.
The paper should have a maximum of eight double-spaced pages (about 2000
words + 12-point Times New Roman font + standard margins). The bibliography is
not included in the maximum of eight pages. Please number all the pages and make
sure that a title page is included. Each paper must make use of five to eight
academic sources (which excludes those from the required readings). Your final
paper must use as many relevant sources from the required readings as possible.

The final product has to demonstrate that you have seriously put an effort in doing all
the previous writing phases. It should have a clearly enunciated thesis, cogently

alternative patterns of explanation? Last but not least, have I corrected any spelling
or grammar mistakes?
