assignment: To create a two-to-five-minute presentation on a historical
decade of your choice within the period 1865 to the present.
This assignment will require you to pick a decade in US history, do some research on it,
pick a presentation tool that works for you, and create a presentation. I expect this
entire process will take you from 3 to 6.5 hours, depending on the time it takes you to do
research and learn how to use the presentation tool.
Part 1 : Pick a decade within the period 1865 to the present. For example, you could
go with the twenties, the eighties, this past decade of 2009-2019, the 1890s, and so on.
Part 2 : Do some research on your decade. In your presentation, you will want to cover
the following topics:
 general introduction of the history of this decade (broad and general is fine here)
 one political or military event that happened in the decade (summarize and
explain the outcome of this event — for example, you could pick a presidency and
talk about the impact, or a war or intervention and do the same thing)
 one person or group who had a lot of influence on the US in this decade (describe
this person/group and how she/he/they influenced history — for a group, it could be
an organization like a social movement or even a business or other type of group, so
feel free to be creative)
 one example that represents the culture of this decade (this could be a physical
thing or a cultural ideal, so get creative. Examples of physical things: clothing like
jeans, Jordans, or the bra, hairstyles like natural, long hair for guys in the '70s or
"the Rachel" in the '90s, or products like the condom in the '80s or the car in the
'20s. Examples of a cultural ideal: sustainability for now, rights revolutions in the
sixties, freedom and the lack of it in the decade from 1865 to 1875.)
 one influential piece of technology from the decade
 one quote or word from the decade (this could be a full quote that relates to the
decade or it could be a quote from someone who was really influential at that time…
or it could just be a word that is/was meaningful — even slang)
