DO NOT write on a character, setting, or theme which you discussed previously in your fairy tale filmic essay.
Select TWO (2) topics from the list below (character, setting, or theme), and write TWO (2) essays which are 3-5 pages each. Answer all of the questions. You may use subtitles to organize your paper. Write a coherent, well-organized, and analytical paper. You are not required to incorporate direct quotations from your primary texts to support and develop your ideas, but such quotations might strengthen your paper. NO SECONDARY SOURCES!

Topics
1. Characters
⦁ Choose THREE (3) significant characters from THREE (3) different permissible
texts as outlined on page 3 below.
⦁  The characters can be the protagonist, antagonist, or an important minor
character.
⦁  One character must be from a literary text; one character must be from a
filmic text; one character can be from either a literary or a filmic text.
⦁  The characters must be from three different texts which are written or
directed by three different authors/directors.
⦁ Who are they? Give their names.
⦁ What are their key characteristics/attributes?
⦁ What ideologies do the characters promote and/or challenge? Compare and
contrast the characters. Do not merely list the similarities and the differences;
what do the similarities and differences signify?
⦁ What do the THREE (3) characters reveal or contribute to our study of filming
literature?
⦁ Are the ideas and ideologies which the characters represent relevant today?
⦁ What would a relevant character in 2021 in Canada look like (real or
hypothetical)? What values and ideologies would this character promote? What pertinent problems might a relevant character correct or address?
2. Settings
a. Choose THREE (3) settings from THREE (3) different permissible texts as
outlined on page 3 below.
One setting must be from a literary text; one setting must be from a filmic
text; one setting can be from either a literary or a filmic text.

⦁ What are the significant/key settings which you have chosen?
⦁ What do they look like?
⦁ What characterizes these settings?
⦁ What ideologies do the landscapes promote and/or challenge?
⦁ How do the settings compare and contrast? Do not merely list the similarities and
the differences; what do the similarities and differences signify?
⦁ Are these settings relevant today? Why? Why not?
⦁ What do the settings reveal or contribute to our study of filming literature?
⦁ What would a relevant setting in 2021 in Canada look like (real or hypothetical)?
What values and ideologies would this setting promote? What pertinent problems might this setting disclose, correct or address?

3. Themes
⦁ Choose ONE (1) theme which is central to THREE (3) different permissible texts
as outlined below.
One theme must be from a literary one; one theme must be from a filmic
text; one theme can be either a literary or a filmic text.
⦁ What is a theme?
⦁ Why is the theme which you have selected significant and worthy of analysis?
⦁ How is the theme treated in the THREE (3) different texts? Compare and contrast
their treatment.
i. Do not merely list the similarities and the differences; what do the
similarities and differences signify?
⦁ Is this theme relevant today? Why? Why not?
⦁ What does the theme reveal and/or contribute to our study of filming literature?
⦁ How should this theme be treated in 2021 in Canada (real or hypothetical)? What
values and ideologies does your treatment of the theme promote? What pertinent problems might your treatment of the theme illuminate, correct or address?
Note: Treatment is the presentation or discussion of a subject. For example, the theme of violence against women is treated differently in “Snow White,” “Little Red Riding Hood”, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, and Othello (both literary texts and films). Therefore, the theme of violence against women might be treated differently in the fairy tales, a romantic comedy, and a tragedy. This topic requires that you discuss the significance of the different treatments of the same theme.
