Watch the Information Literacy video. Do a search for a peer-reviewed article on negative body talk (this
is the search term you will input). The SECOND article that comes up in the PsychINFO database search
is the one you will use for your paper.
There are three hypotheses for the study on negative body talk (AKA fat talk).
 Pick hypothesis 1 or 3 and post it in your discussion (note which hypothesis you're addressing).
Include the complete APA citation for the article.
● Reply to another student by explaining the dependent variable (DV) and independent variable
(IV) for the hypothesis that was posted by the person you're replying to. Include a statement about
how the IV and DV were operationally defined.
● Be sure to check back and let the person who replied to you know whether or not they correctly
identified the IV and DV (and their operational definitions) for the hypothesis that you posted.
You do not need to read the entirety of the fat talk article (just the last paragraph on page 45 and two
sections on page 46). You need to know the hypotheses (last paragraph on page 45) and the IV (pay
attention to the Design section) and the DV (pay attention to the Measures section) and how they were
operationally defined.
Here is an example:
Hypothesis 2 – Women would report higher engagement in fat talk and more positive consequences of fat
talk than men. There were two DV for this hypothesis: 1) self-report measure of engagement or frequency
of fat-talk – the operational definition, or measure, of the frequency of fat talk, was an open-ended
question. 2) reasons for fat talk – the operational definition, or measure of reasons for fat talk, was
Positive Reasons for Fat Talk Scale.
PSY*111 is a transfer course within the CSCU system. As a result there are embedded competencies is
Written Communication and Information Literacy in all PSY*111 courses. In my onground courses, I
take students to the Library for an orientation and to complete an exercise that results in locating a
particular journal article (the article on fat talk). I needed to find a way to include this content in the
online class, hence the brief video on Information Literacy and the content of Discussion 1 (which isn't
too much of a discussion). Consequently, for Discussion 1, you really just need to follow the instructions
and post the reference and one of the hypotheses. You need to reply to someone else explaining the DV of
the hypothesis they posted. I would also like you to confirm with the person who answered your post by
confirming whether or not they correctly identified the DV. The rest of the discussions in the course are
better aligned with the rubric.
