Oral Presentation: Instructions

You will prepare an  Oral Presentation presentation that addresses four concepts from the course. The purpose of this project ensure students can clearly articulate course topics, as well as to help develop your oral presentation skills. Your objectives are to 1) identify concepts and issues relevant to topics in the course, 2) teach viewers about the research related to this issue by clearly applying it to scientific studies, and 3) use an interactive/engaging presentation style.

 

Instructions

  1. You must select a news story in The New York Times; all students have free access to the New York Times via FIU. (Links to an external site.)  You must use the New York Times; other news outlets or options will not be accepted. Only articles from the New York Times are accepted for this assignment. This is because the New York Times has been identified as one of the most accurate and unbiased sources of news in the United States today. You can pick a news story from any section of the New York Times. However, this news story must have been published during the past year; this means you need to count back no more than 12 months from the date this course ends.
  2. You will identify four course concepts that are applicable to your New York Times news story. These concepts must from at least two different chapters in the course textbook. Essentially, you are picking concepts to apply to the video from across the course. This is like the Weekly Discussion except you are responsible for finding the article, identifying relevant concepts and orally presenting them.
  3. Then you will follow the structure of the provided pdf template from a PowerPoint presentation to present your concepts. Your PowerPoint can look different, but the same content, order and key components laid out in the pdf template must be included in your own PowerPoint presentation. This means you must have one slide for summarizing the article (it will include the title, date, and URL link, date), one slide providing listing the four course concepts you will apply to your article, one slide for each of the four concepts (total 4), and one slide for future considerations. Additionally, you will have an opening slide and ending slide. This means you will have a total of nine slides.
  4. This is an oral presentation so you are being graded, in part, on your ability to articulate your work. This means you should NOT be reading your slides word for word in your video. Also, the content should just be presented using bullet points. Viewers do not want to spend time reading what you are saying. Your oral discussion during the presentation should be conversational style. Please see the provided example as a guide.
  5. To ensure that each student is able to articulate their own work, you must be visible in the video recording either throughout or at the start and end of their presentation. Presenters must speak clearly and be easily heard. If your presentation is not clear visually or audibly it will be the same as submitting a poorly written paper.
  6. You will record your presentation using Zoom or another program that will provide a final MP4 File. Students can record the presentation themselves using Zoom; all students have Zoom Accounts via FIU (Links to an external site.). You can use another program they are more comfortable with. However, the final submission must be formatted into a MP4 file and you are responsible for ensuring it is view-able and the audio is clear.
  7. The final Oral Presentation file must be submitted to Dr. Stephens via the Google Drive instructions provided on or before the due date stated in the course syllabus. Students must submit the file as outlined in ASSIGNMENT INFO- ORAL PRESENTATION- ORAL PRESENTATION: SUBMISSIONS. Submissions sent after 11pm on the due date are considered late.  A submission is only considered complete when the file has been successfully received by Dr. Stephens AND contains all required audio visual components (e.g. sound, viewable). Please note that for every 6 hours that your completed Oral Presentation is not received, an additional 2.5 points are deducted out of the assignment’s possible 10 points  (11am/ 11pm); after 24 hours you will earn a zero. These points deductions will take place for any reason including:
      • technical difficulties with uploading/ submitting the presentation
      • submitted presentation cannot be viewed, lack audio or has other issues that affects Dr. Stephens’ ability to grade
      • illnesses or other personal stressors
