Instructions: Each student is required to locate, interpret, and summarize two current research studies related to nutrition within a specific life cycle stage during the semester. (Two written abstracts at 50 points each for a total of 100 points)

First, locate a primary research article which addresses a major nutrition problem associated with the life cycle stage you’ve selected (this means major nutrition problems common with each life cycle stage as covered in assigned course readings).
Your article must be available through the “PubMed” online database search engine located at URL: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed
Your research article must be research done using “human subjects”.
Your article must be current (which means a publishing year date from 2013-2021).
Your journal article must be at least 5 pages in length.
The article must be an original or primary “research” study and must be published in a “peer-reviewed” scientific journal (see sample list of peer-reviewed approved journals below). Please note that meta-analyses and literature review articles will not be accepted.

Q. What is an article Abstract?
An abstract is a written summary of an article or other literary work. In this class, we will write abstracts on peer reviewed research articles about nutrition related life-cycle issues.
Q. How long should my article Abstract summary be?
Your summary should be at least one page long, but if there are many details, the paper could be two pages. Must be double-spaced and have one-inch margins.
Include a complete reference citation of journal article above your formal abstract paragraph.
APA format (7th edition) will be utilized for citing your journal article:
Name, (Year). Name of article. Name of Journal, volume number, page range.

Include the in-text citation (meaning the authors of the study) in the first sentence of the abstract.

Start with a sentence summarizing the entire article. What was the problem being addressed?
Provide information about the purpose or rationale of the study. What was the central purpose or focus of this study? [Note: you will find this information located at the end of the introduction in most good research articles, just before the methods/subjects]
Briefly state information about the sample, population, or subjects. Who (the subjects & how many), where (location of research study), when (dates research was conducted), and how (methods for collecting data)?
Summarize the key results. Most important findings of the study, which relate to the central purpose mentioned above.
Discuss and interpret the key findings in the article. Why are these findings significant for this life cycle stage?
Write a conclusion. How do the key findings of this research study address the problem being addressed in your first sentence of this abstract?
Q. What is an Application paragraph?
An applications paragraph demonstrates how you would apply the findings from this current research article in the professional practice setting when providing nutrition counseling to a client in this stage of the life cycle. This paragraph is 3 to 5 sentences in length, double-spaced, and approximately one-half of a page.
Q. What is a Journal Article PDF file?

This is the electronic file of the actual research article, which you are using, for the assignment. You will attach the article file link to your discussion board post. In the subject line of your post, you will write the full article title. In the message portion of your post, you will write the full article reference citation (according to sample provided). Note: You will need to locate the actual published version of your article as found in the peer-reviewed journal. An online version of your article will not be accepted. An abstract only version of your article will not be accepted. An online link to your article will not be accepted. An author’s manuscript will not be accepted. Q. How do I write the citation required for my abstract?

Any additional lines will utilize a hanging indent (found under the paragraph button above.)Once in the paragraph section, look for indentation, under “special” click hanging and click the okay button. Q. My article has an abstract. Can’t I just use that?
Most of the abstracts in nutrition contain language that is unfamiliar to many college students. I want you to learn to read and summarize what you read in your own words. Every semester I catch at least one plagiarizer, don’t be that student this semester.

Q. Why don’t you want me to use the word “I” in the formal abstract?
The word “I” is not appropriate for formal writing. Use “The authors of this study discussed…. Instead of “I” found that the authors of this study enjoyed working with brainy kids.”
Q. What should my final work look like? 2 pages, no more than 3 pages including reference, abstract, and application.

Providing children with opportunities to eat fresh vegetables during the school day is an effective way to increase the daily vegetable consumption of children in America and lower their future risk of chronic disease resulting from a lack of daily vegetable consumption.

Life Cycle Stage Application:
This paragraph is 3 to 5 sentences in length, double-spaced, and approximately one-half of a page in length. Based on assigned course readings and case study projects for this life cycle stage, how do the findings from your selected research study support the your nutrition recommendations for individuals in this life cycle stage. How will you use this information in your client counseling? This research article addresses the nutrition problem of inadequate vitamin, mineral, and fiber intakes of children as evidenced by inadequate amounts of vegetable consumed in the daily diets of most school-aged children (Calvin, Hobbs, & Simpson, 2011). By including availability of fresh vegetables on the school lunch menu every day which have no added seasonings, this research study found that children are more willing to include plain vegetables to which they can add their own seasonings (Calvin et al., 2011). Vegetable consumption increased by 150% when children are given the opportunity to season their own vegetables. I will use this information when I counsel mothers of school-aged children to help them with ways to increase the daily consumption of vegetables for their children. I can also highlight this research study in providing nutrition education via the school newsletter, which goes out to all parents in the Special K school district on monthly basis on the back of the school menu. It is also available online at the school’s website.
